There's a new magazine launching next month in Canada. It's called "The Walrus", and has been promoted and talked about for months.
I just found out that in some cases, they're going to be paying writers up to $2.50 a word. That's insane!! CBC's "enroute" magazine, which used to be the topper, paid $1 a word. I usually get about 10 cents, or 15 cents a word. (which isn't bad when you write for extra income, but would suck ass if you're trying to live off that.)
With these kind of payments, intense competition, and the instability in the industry it's no wonder that so many of the writers I know have other jobs, are dirt poor, or marry rich. (I'm serious.)
I still can't get over this. I have no idea how this magazine expects to survive.
But I also think this is cool- I'll have to go visit my friends in Calgary and check it out.
