It's hot in my apartment and 2 drunk women are yelling at each other outside. I just wish I could sleep like a normal person.

Okay, I don't know how to link it because I just woke up and my brain is still half asleep, but if you go to http://www.placesforwriters.com and scroll down, there's an article from the "Toronto Star" about the rising popularity of the graphic novel in North America. The article includes a large section on "Maus" (!). (Now Melissa is bouncing up and down in her chair, hee!)

This article mentions the Canadian impact on graphic novels. Actually, the city with the most impact on graphic novels is my beloved Montreal. This is because Montreal embraces both North American themes and European themes. Europeans have generally been more open to the graphic novel form, so Montreal, which straddles two cultures, is one of the most innovative places for graphic novels. They also have this cool thing called "comix jam" where an artist begins to draw a panel, and then the work is continued by another artist. Fun times.

Last night the French bistro celebrated Bastille Day. So there was about 30 French people below my apartment, eating, and drinking wine. So many of them were smoking cigars that my apartment actually smelled a bit like cigars. I forgot about it, or I would have gone down for some dessert. However, I was pretty brain dead, and was in my pyjamas at 8, reading Mongolian history. After its huge conquest of the world, Mongolia was invaded numerous times by Japanese, Chinese and Russians. If I were a Mongolian, I'd be pretty sick of these constant invasions.

I find Mongolian history interesting because I studied Chinese and Russian history in university. I loved Chinese history, and liked Russian history okay, but skipped a lot of it to read poetry in the library. Still, it's interesting to find out about the little country in between these two powerful giants.

Anyway, I just found a fascinating article on women in action films, and how they are still pretty damn sexist.

It's in ms. magazine's blog- which is really good.

http://www.msmagazine.com/blog

One thing that they mentioned is that women action heroes tend to do a lot of kicking. This makes sense to me, since women tend to have more lower body strength. On the other hand, the article says that when the cameras film the women, they tend to linger more on their butts and legs and it tends to be more sexual.

Okay, I need to do work, but I love the World Wide Waste of Time...

Speaking of attractive women, I think I love my new icon.

Yes, I've been working. But I also read about a possible postal strike in Canada, so if you're in Canada and read any news stories about this strike, please direct me to them. I am a mail junkie, and though I know that postal workers deserve to strike, I really hope they don't.

Today's strange Asian product- "Fiance" and "Fiancee"

These are juices from Korea. They come in these little silver cans and say "Send for you" on them. "Fiance" is grape juice, and "Fiancee" is strawberry juice. The "Fiance" is much better. Soon I will be courageous enough to try "Pocari Sweat." The name just turns me off.

This is disjointed, because I'm procrastinating a little and taking a break...
I was thinking today that Japan should be high on my list of countries to visit. Not in the near future, as I don't have the funds, but eventually.

Here are some reasons
1. Zen and Buddhism
2. Onsen- hot baths!!
3. Sushi!!
4. Shoes and Japanese fashion!!
5. a fascinating history which includes samurais and ronin
6. Strange pop culture and general weirdness.
7. I love the Japanese sense of humour. I used to work at an ESL centre and the Japanese people always cracked me up.

To tell you the truth, I could probably make this list about any country. The only countries I would hesitate to visit in Asia are Korea, India, and Papua New Guinea.

I'd go almost anywhere in the world, given the opportunity. I'm a little cautious about Africa, due to the parasites there. As regular readers of this journal will note, I'm prone to getting weird skin rashes or infections. I'm also iffy about the Middle East, just because it's hard to travel there as a woman and some areas aren't very stable. I don't know if I could spend a lot of time in an unstable country. I tend to get a bit jumpy and anxious. However, I'd like to live overseas again, and while I'm not sure if I'd like to be a foreign correspondent, I would like to do big features or books on ethnic relations or different cultures.

But for now, I dream. Looks like Canada will be home for a while. I do admit, I would like the feeling of having a bunch of plane tickets in my hand, and I would love to have the thought, "Now where do I want to go today?...."

Back to work....

I've been contradicting myself a lot lately.

I'm really sorry about that.
