Last night, [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com], Heather and I went to see "The Barbarian Invasions". I thought it was quite good. It was both sad and uplifting, and in my opinion, very Quebecois. It made me miss Montreal. I was distracted because all the actors looked familiar.

1. "Lullaby" by Chuck Palahniuk- Palahniuk wrote the book version of "Fight Club". I really liked "Lullaby", it was dark and twisted, but really interesting. I read it based on [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]'s recommendation. I plan to read more stuff by him.

2. "Various miracles" by Carol Shields- Excellent. I love Shields' stories. She's a master.

3. "Fire and Ice" by Michael Adams- a study of how the social values of Americans and Canadians differ and how this shows up in our societies. Interesting, and not what you'd expect.

4. "Nickel and Dimed" by Barbara Ehrenheich- I liked it, I think a lot of people should read it. It had some flaws, but was generally well done.

5. "The Namesake" by Jhumpa Lahiri- A good story about the growth and evolution of an immigrant Indian family. I liked it, but not as much as her short story collection "Interpreter of Maladies". While Lahiri is a phenomenal writer, this book was not as good as the collection, which is brilliant. Still, it's worth reading.

6. "Under the duvet"- essays by Marian Keyes. I love Marian Keyes, but I hated this book. I think it made her come off as neurotic and shallow. I read most of it, but that's only because I was temping and it was the only book I had.
