The Oscar project - "How green was my valley"

The latest addition to the Oscar project was the 1941 winner, How Green was my valley . This is a fantastic picture, based on the book of the same name by Richard Llewyn. I think that the book must also be quite good, as the movie uses a narrative voice-over device which works quite well. Directed by John Ford, with cinematography by Arthur Miller, this movie details the life of a young boy growing up in a family of coal miners. It takes places in a small village in Wales. The characters are excellent, there's a lot of subplots, the script is great, and there are some surprisingly feminist characters. In one scene, the miners debate the pros and cons of having a union, even though one of the miners says it will bring them closer to the devil. Struggle, and the closeness of family are wonderfully portrayed. This is a first rate film!!
