Vancouver movies

Help me Vancouverites!

Do you remember certain locations used in movies? Can you supply me a few of them?

Example- The Vancouver Art gallery was used in Scooby Doo, and the L word.
The HMV building was used in the Fantastic Four.
St Andrews and Wellsley is in X Men 3.

Thanks in advance, you'll be helping my marketing class project.

Blade 3 (and probably the first two as well), filmed in the streets of Gastown.
Cats & Dogs had some scenes on the PNE grounds.

Huh. I know of a ton more, but can't think of them. Go figure. :)

Josie and the Pussycats was shot all around Vancouver. In the audio commentary track, the director noted that certain spots were so well-used by film crews that there were layers of gaffing tape left behind on the sidewalks. There was a building they mention (I'll check when I have time) that they used several different ways with redressing (don't remember which, but I think Smallville's used the same building, and there's an aquarium? Er...not especially helpful, I know. I'll do some digging.

i should also mention that ecks vs. sever actually didn't try to re-dress or disguise the city at all. they decided that vancouver was an intriguing character and so used instead of trying to pretend like it was somewhere else they turned it into a story that took place in vancouver. all the locations were chosen because they were recognizable as vancouver landmarks (ie. the VPL downtown)

oh yea and the train station @ main and terminal shows up in everything! (ie. taken, 5 days to midnight, x-files, the butterfly effect)

Do you remember certain locations used in movies? Can you supply me a few of them?

Some classics from the '80s would include a slice of Gastown in the Neverending Story and Queen Elizabeth Park in The Boy Who Could Fly. More recently, the 6th Day made much use of the VPL Central Branch as well as the exterior of the International Village.

UBC - that new Al Pacino film with 88 in the title
SFU - X-files, 6th day
VPL - 6th day

will think up more throughout the day...

I'm a former Vancouverite and I know I've seen lots of movies filmed in Vancouver, but the only one I can think of right now is Life or Something Like It. There's a scene where Angelina Jolie is standing in front of the Coast Capital building at Georgia & Thurlow. I never saw the movie, I just saw them filming it.

apologies if this was already mentioned ...

"6th Day" also did some filming on Commercial Drive

"88 Minutes" also at Davie and Thurlow near the bar with the bubble machine

"Three Men and a Baby" in a suite of the Manhattan Co-op at Robson & Thurlow.

"X-Men 3" on North Fraser Way (near Boundary and Marine), in a giant green-screen environment set up in an abandoned field. It was a very weird, eye-searing green scaffolding

I made Dean think things up in the car last night. He spouted off this huge list none of which I can remember. The part that I managed to recall is that there was a film shot almost entirely in New West along Sixth Street.

Also, I don't know if you want tv shows or not but they filmed a scene in an episode of X-files at the apartment building on the northeast corner of Salsbury and Parker.

So you have a deadline on this? Dean did a lot of work as a PA for a while and I could ask him to post his list here. But maybe it's too late.

There really isn't a due date yet, but I have decided to limit it to Vancouver and Burnaby. I will let you know if we need more locations. I've discovered a lot more than this initial list, but hopefully my group partners have done some work as well.

And they kept a generator running all day across the street from my window. Annoying!

Vancouver locations

I assume you've found the Vancouver film locations (http://www.imdb.com/List?endings=on&&locations=Vancouver,%20British%20Columbia,%20Canada&&heading=18;with+locations+including;Vancouver,%20British%20Columbia,%20Canada) link on the IMDB.

Excess Baggage has tons of Vancouver footage...so much that it might as well have been set here. The Ovaltine Cafe figures prominently. It was years ago, though, so I can't tell you much more. Lots of Gastown/DTES shots.

Thank you so much. My partners have also been gathering research and I think we have a good amount.

Paycheck starring Ben Affleck was filmed at UBC Robson Square. Ditto for Xmen (at least 2 of them if not all 3).

you mentioned The L Word, so i guess TV Shows are good too?

Smallville used The Whip cafe just off of Main St. in their first few seasons as "The Beanery" where the kids hung out and Lana Lang got her first job.

Wasn't Back To The Future filmed at the art gallery?

I think the Central Library was blown up in a bad Arnold Schwarzenegger movie... it was also used in Ecks Vs Sever.

A lot of people seem to think the Exorcism of Emily Rose was filmed at SFU. Maybe some scenes were, I don't know, but I didn't recognize them if they were. Most of it was filmed at UBC. The court room and dorm room both used the Macmillan Building, the scene where she sees the couple with the umbrella as their faces turn to demons is right in front of the Biology Sciences Building, and also in that scene, when Emily's boyfriend sees her running and calls out her name, he's standing by the Mathematics Building.

Also, parts of Alone in the Dark were filmed at the Museum of Anthropology at UBC, and some parts were filmed downtown Vancouver (forgot the street name, but they didn't change the sign in the film so it's pretty clear).

Part of Halloween: Resurrection was filmed at Place Vanier Residence at UBC.

Miracle was apparently filmed at Totem Park Residence at UBC.

A lot of The Butterfly Effect was filmed at UBC (in front of Koerner Library and all over campus, as well as parts of Vancouver).

Al Pacino was here last term filming. I'm assuming that was for 88 Minutes but I'm not sure.

I don't know if you're still working on your marketing project, but hope that helps! =)

TV Shows at UBC

I don't know if you wanted TV shows as well, but MacGuyver (Main Library/Clock Tower, and Chemistry building), X-files (Main Library/Clock Tower), and Smallville (Main Mall strip) would all make that list. A Dell commercial was also filmed at UBC (Main Library/Clock Tower). And I think I'm all out now ;)
