What I've been reading lately
1. Endless love by Scott Spencer- This was apparently a scandalous book in the 1970s. It's still somewhat scandalous now. It's really a tale about obsession. It begins with a young man who is burning down his lover's house. He then goes to jail, but remains completely obsessed with her. It's a very weird story, with some really graphic sex scenes in the middle. These scenes go on for about 30 pages.
2. Tess of the D'Ubervilles by Thomas Hardy- I'm trying to read more classics. For a while I thought I should do an English degree, but that seems to be a waste of money when I can just read the books. Anyway, this one was pretty interesting, but supremely depressing. I did manage to read it all and stay interested the whole book. I thought it said a lot about the time period. Also enjoyed how it concentrated on the life of a woman.
3. Dairy Queen by Catherine Gilbert Murdock- A teen book about a tomboy who lives on a dairy farm. I liked the variety of problems encountered by the main character and the character development. I sped right through this book.
4. You remind me of me by Dan Chaon- My mom gave me this book, which I can't recommend highly enough. It starts out with a bunch of fragments, which are all interconnected. The main story is about two half-brothers and their search for identity and friendship. It's a unique story and the writing in it is quite beautiful and realistic. Highly recommended.
5. No apologies for the weather by Taylor Leedahl- This book of poetry made me feel really old because it was written by my friend's daughter!! It has a lot of beautiful details about growing up in Saskatoon, and I quite enjoyed it.
