I watched a Metallica icons thing on MTV tonight and I was surprised how revved up it got me. I was headbanging, and doing the horns. I forgot how much I like some of Metallica's songs. Technically, Metallica is a great band. Kirk Hammett is a clasically trained guitarist, and it shows. Part of me has always wished that I could growl like James Hetfield. Sometimes Metallica pisses me off (like their whole Nabster deal)but in general, they really are a kick ass rock band. And they've been doing it for 20 years, which is pretty amazing.
I love metal, to tell you the truth. I like hearing old Guns and Roses, and Skid Row and all those cheesy ballads. I love guitar rock and bad hair. Put on Manowar or Steve Vai, and I will be on the ground laughing at the cheesiness. Which is why I also love Sum 41 because they remind me of this.
I have good associations with metal because it reminds me of the good parts of high school. Driving around in cars, wearing my ripped up jeans, chilling with friends. I was super into guitars and music and goth stuff and this was how I first learned to talk to guys. I would be the girl sitting at a table full of guys, talking about guitars and Dungeons and Dragons or music videos and stuff like that. For some reason, knowing about music and guitars gave me confidence.
I've been passionate about music for as long as I can remember. I remember playing my own copy of Abbey Road over and over. I remember making my parents play Bruce Springsteen and Tina Turner. When I was 8, I wanted to be Cyndi Lauper more than anything. For me, the big thing about turning 19 wasn't that I could drink. It meant that I could go to the bar and see bands.
I have a weird attraction to musicians. I've dated 2 guys seriously into the music business and I'm going to try to stay away from musicians from now on. But it's like I can smell them or something, like they exude some strange pheremone that I can sense. Even when I meet a guy that I find attractive in a non-music setting, I will often find out later that he's a musician. It's strange.
I've been like this my whole life. I've been a fool for music. No one else in my family is like this, which is interesting.
And I was somewhat impressed that I still know all the words to the songs on the black album.
