I'm reading "Mystic River" right now. I like it a lot, but I actually think the movie was a better version of the story. The book has additional characters. The movie did a great job of telling the story, and increased the pacing of the story. Has anyone read anything else by Dennis Lehane? I think he's a master of dialogue.

The cedar waxwings are back in the backyard. There are hundreds of them. I don't want to let McGregor out in the back, because I'm scared they will peck him to death.

The dialogue really is the strongest part of that book, including the internal dialogue.
