Into the Woods

Last night B* and I went to see Capilano College's production of "Into the Woods." I really wanted to see it because "Into the Woods" was proposed for a final project during a musical theatre camp I attended. I'd heard some of the songs and read some of the script. I'd also managed to catch part of the show on television one time, but I'd never seen it in its entirety.

"Into the Woods" is a Stephen Sondheim musical based on fairy tales. In the first Act, traditional fairy tales are combined and performed in a humourous and somewhat twisted rendition. In the Second Act, all hell breaks loose and the characters have to contend with some of the choices they've made in the First Act. It's a funny play with a ton of characters and some good songs. The Capilano College group did a fairly professional job, with excellent sets and costuming. It was a good show.

My favourite line in the play is delivered by one of the princes. He says, "I was raised to be charming, not sincere."

B* and I were very impressed with Capilano College's funding. The campus is gorgeous, very new and well designed. We found out that the campus has only been around since 1968. We're not quite sure how they are funded, but on the way home, B* read that they have a deal with Coca Cola. If they sell enough Coke products on campus, Coke gives them some money. If they don't sell enough, they must give money to Coke. We thought this was weird. Still, I'm not sure if it explains the wealth of the Cap college campus.

Lots of schools have deals with soda companies. Maybe it is more common in the US though. That's why junior high and high schools are so reluctant to give up their soda machines, even though kids are getting so fat. They make money.

I love Into the Woods!

Alexis didn't like my favourite line as much. It's about Jack and the Beanstalk:

"The ends, justify the beans"

ack! I'm sad that I only found out about this today -- on the last day of the run!

A friend of mine adores this play -- performed in it once, many years ago, and has the Broadway production (with Bernadette Peters as the witch) on DVD. It's fabulous. :)

My favourite line is by the witch:

"You're so nice. You're not good, you're not bad, you're just nice. I'm not good, I'm not nice, I'm just right!"

As far as I know, most schools in Canada have an agreement with either Coke or Pepsi. Even my nephews elementary school.

Is it over already? I would've liked to have seen this - just because it's a musical I haven't seen yet. However, I'm not too fond of Sondheim musicals and I did borrow the CD from the library and wasn't too impressed with the music and songs. But it would've been interesting to see...
