That book meme
1. Total number of books I own: Not as many as you'd think. I tend to borrow a lot. Probably about 300-400. I also tend to "share" a lot of books with my parents and friends. My parents and I consider all our books communal.
2. Last book I bought: Right before I went home, I bought "You grow Girl" by Gayla Trail.
3. Last book I read: "Skinny Dip" by Carl Hiaasen. It was typical Hiaasen, weird character, screwball plot etc.
4. 5 books that mean a lot to me:
What's Eating Gilbert Grape- by Peter Hedges- because the characters were not perfect and I wish I could get into a person's head like that. I related to the story and the main character and the feeling of wanting to leave and stay.
Charlotte's Web- by EB White- I love this book. My favourite lines are "It is rare to meet someone who is a good friend and a good writer. Charlotte was both."
Writing down the Bones- Natalie Goldberg- The book that made me realize I was a writer and that I could do it. It also sparked my interest in Buddhism.
Getting up when you're feeling down- by Dr. Harriet L Braiker- an anti-depression guide for women. My copy has been to Montreal, Alberta, Indonesia, Mongolia and Vancouver. It's an excellent resource.
My year of meats by Ruth Ozeki- I relate to the main character way too much. It's also one of the first books I read with a bi-racial main character. I also love the many levels of this story; it's political, personal, and multicultural.

The Braiker book sounds like something I should read, and thanks for the reminder to pick up My Year of Meats. I've been meaning to read that for a long time.

Happily, they're usually first out of the boxes.
