Uncle Ben gets a makeover

A few weeks ago, I read that Uncle Ben, the character from Uncle Ben's rice, has been given a make over. Uncle Ben, who was created in 1946, was previously a servant but is now a board chairman.

The New York Times contributed this article about Uncle Ben .

Now his website is just weird.

This was surprising to me for a few reasons, one of which being that for some reason, I had recast Uncle Ben's ethnicity as Chinese. I'm not quite sure why. It's possible that it has been numerous years since I've actually bought a package of Uncle Ben's rice and I somehow managed to forget the trademark character.

(I did have an Uncle Ben, who was Chinese)

testing my memory

Because who knows, maybe I recast him in my mind too -- he's black, right?

*clicks website*

Okay, yeah, that's pretty weird. I can't really think of a situation in which I'm turning to the internet for easy access to information about quick-cook rice, but want to obtain it by wandering aimlessly through a Flash-animated adventure of looking through a fictional character's appointment book of rice-related speaking engagements.

Aside

If I read or type the word "rice" too often I start thinking it's like "mice" and that I should switch some of the uses to "rouse" or similar. "Rice" has now been unworded in my mind.

I think that I heard about this first around April Fools' Day. I thought that it was a joke, really.

But what a gaudy website!
