I'm officially sick with a cold. Hopefully I'll be able to go to work tomorrow, as this is kind of a busy week for me.

1. Tenacious D and the Pick of Destiny- I watched this when I wanted something dumb and meaningless to watch. I thought it was really funny, but then I enjoy stupidity, metal jokes, dick jokes and Jack Black.

2. Wordplay- A documentary about an annual crossword puzzle tournament. Features interviews with the editor of the New York Times Crossword puzzle, crossword constructors, people who can do a New York Times crossword puzzle in 8 minutes (etc) and scenes from the crossword puzzle tournament of champions. Strangely interesting. If you liked Word Wars or Spellbound, you'll like this movie.

3. Hot Fuzz- Watched this movie with two friends. It wasn't one that I'd planned to see, but a friend rented it and I ended up loving it. It had a really crooked plot twist that was a lot of fun, and it makes fun of action movies. I didn't appreciate the extreme violence, but still enjoyed this movie a lot.

4. Quincenara- A movie about a young Mexican girl who is going to celebrate her 15th birthday/coming of age party when she discovers she is pregnant. Her parents flip out and she moves in with her great-uncle. The great uncle, who is the cutest man alive, is also housing her cousin who has been ostracized from his family too. The three outcasts form a family together. Rather predictable ending. The guy who played the great uncle was my favourite part because he was one of the cutest old dudes that I've ever seen.

5. Les Ballets Russes- A documentary about ballet companies that featured Russian refugees. These companies were the first to tour North America, the first to perform Agnes De Mille's rodeo and the first to feature ballet dancers like stars. Features tons of interviews with really old and eccentric dance people, many of whom are in their 80s and 90s and still teaching or performing. Worth watching if you're interested in dance history.

6. Michael Clayton- A legal/political thriller with excellent acting by a very pretty Clooney and a very sweaty and brunette Tilda Swinton. Soderbergh tends to lose me a bit, because he often structures his plots in a non-linear fashion. Still, this movie was interesting and worth seeing, and I LOVED the final shot of the film.

7. Riding alone for thousands of miles- This is a very slow, but beautiful film. It's about a Japanese man, who travels to Tokyo to see his dying, estranged son. THe son refuses to see him, but his daughter-in-law shows Takata (the father) some tapes of Chinese opera that his son has been filming in rural China. Determined to finish taping the opera as a gift for his son, Takata travels to rural China where he meets a lot of interesting villagers. I won't say anything more, but it's a moving story and it's beautifully shot. What I also found interesting about the film is that Takata has to use translators to communicate with those around him, which adds some extra dimensions to the film, because it shows how we can communicate without words, and how difficult it is to communicate with people who don't speak the same language (literally and figuratively). A good film, but a slow one.

i saw wordplay last week, and liked it a lot. strangely, this is the second time it's randomly come up since then.

i watched the tenacious d movie on an airplane, on my laptop. i think it was a good thing that my aisle-mates were sleeping.
