I love you, man

Yesterday I walked downtown to see "I love you, man" which I can actually say that I loved. It had only a few gross bits, and mostly succeeded in being quite funny. I think it's one of the few films that deals with male friendship and the importance of having friends, even if you are in a good romantic partnership. I personally have always managed to have good friends wherever I live and have always had friends whether or not I have a romantic partner. However, I do know that male friendship is trickier than female friendship. I know of several male friends (or partners of my female friends) who have had a very difficult time meeting like-minded men. This is even more true when these men work in a female-dominated profession. It can be hard for an enviromentally friendly, thoughtful, active and book reading artistic dude to find another man to be friends with. I think that "I love you, man" accurately portrayed some of the appeals of same sex friendships and how friendships and romantic partnerships can bump heads. I recommend it for these reasons. And if you like Jason Segel or Paul Rudd, that's simply a bonus.

Mother frakker

On Saturday, I was in a Vietnamese restaurant in Red Deer at the same time as a group of local oil patch workers. I'm not sure what these guys did, but they were dressed in work clothes and spent a lot of time talking about "up north and Fort McMurray", which is pretty much slang for "the oil patch."

One of the guys was talking loudly and really liked to swear. However, instead of actually saying f*ck, he had adapted his speech to the Battlestar Galatica vernacular and made references to "Those frakkers. Motherfracker. A bunch of frackers" etc.

I was sitting across the room and had to concentrate really hard to keep myself from laughing.
