I'm having a hard time concentrating this morning. I definitely don't feel like working, and have done very little. Normally I start actually working at about 8 or 9, and today I've only written a few paragraphs.

I didn't actually watch the Grammys but just youtubed a bunch of the performances. Pink's was crazy. I can't believe that she was actually singing while being in that sling. It's obvious that she is in really good physical shape, as those movements that she was doing take a lot of body strength.

I don't have much to say about the Oscar noms except that I really don't want Avatar, James Cameron or Quentin Tarantino to win. There's a lot of ridiculousness in the noms this year. I don't plan to go see "A Serious Man" and I think that "A single man" should have been nominated for cinematography. I'm pretty happy with the best actress noms, and the best actor noms and it's nice to see "The Cove" and "Food Inc" receive recognition. They were both great docs. I'm also happy for the recognition for "District 9" and "An Education", and think that I'll have to get to "Crazy Heart" in the next couple of weeks.

My weekend

On Friday I took part of the day off, did a bunch of errands and then went downtown to see "Nine." My verdict, great production numbers, low on plot. It's a bit like "Avatar" because you have to turn off your brain. In reality, all it is is a festival of boobs. Everyone's boobs are hoisted up to their chins and look amazing. Even Judi Dench displays an impressive rack in this movie. My annoyance with Nicole Kidman continues to grow, especially since she has now had so much botox that it has become difficult for her to move her face.

The camera seemed determine to linger on various breasts and was even more intrusive during a dance number starring Penelope Cruz. In that particular number, Cruz is wearing this tiny little body suit with an extremely thin strip of fabric between her legs. Actually, a lot of the outfits worn in this movie are tiny, and I think a Brazilian waxer must have been employed on set. There are a lot of crotch shots and I think I might have even seen her uterus in one dance move. It was rather disturbing and I felt slightly violated. So yeah, there are some great dance numbers, but I wouldn't run down to see this one. I'm curious as to how the Oscars treat it.

That night, it was Mari's birthday, so 8 of us gathered to go out for dinner. We had good food, but our waitress was probably baked out of her skull. She seemed VERY stoned. One of the diners at our table was celiac. He ordered the salmon, as did our friend Tom, a non-celiac. After they'd been eating for a while, the waitress came out and told us that the wrong plates had been delivered and that Clinton had been consuming gluten. I was more pissed about this than anyone else at the table, probably owing to my severe nut allergy. I had a hard time not glaring at the waitress.

Saturday I did more errands, walked around the area and did a bunch of things, then went to a wine and cheese at my friend Amanda's. Amanda has just cleared the over 30 milestone, and so there were a lot of people (and about 10 different cheeses) at the party. I decided to bring a tray of cut up pears, because I thought the fruit would go nicely with the wine and cheese. It was a massive hit and people just went crazy over those pears. So there's my recommendation to you if you are ever at a wine and cheese party and don't really know what to bring.

Oh, and I finished watching all of Glee. Interested to see what they'll be doing when it starts up again.

So I spent New Year's at my friend Mari's. We had grand plans to get to several parties but we never got there in time. Mari had received a creme brulee set from her bf's mom, so she ended up making us creme brulee. It was my first time having creme brulee. I'm not sure how that happened. The creme brulee set even came with a little blow torch so Mari's bf torched the creme brulee, while her roommate Stephanie stood by with the fire extinguisher. For those of you playing along at home, all these events actually went down at Todd Babiak's since Mari and Stephanie are housesitting for him while he is in France. In hopes of embarrassing him, I scoured Todd's bookcases looking for shameful items, but he doesn't seem to have any. He must hide them.

During this time, I tried bourbon, discovered that I don't like it and drank some Vampire wine instead. I'd seen the Vampire wine in the offsale here and was eager to try it. It's actually not bad. However, I don't think I could actually take it anywhere, as then I'd be the crazy goth girl who showed up with the vampire wine.

At midnight, I kissed Henry, Mari's Boston terrier. Then Mari and her bf went to the Artery to meet up with more peeps, and I went home to sleep.

The next day, I did a lot of nothing and watched a lot of Glee on DVD. Love! On Saturday, I did a bunch of errands then went down to the Black dog bar to see a free set done by a guy I know named Doug Hoyer . I met Doug at a bbq at my friend's and we always chat when we run into each other. His music is pretty cool; he's got great lyrics and wonderful melodies and some really catchy songs. I actually think his music could become quite popular if it fell into the right hands. Anyway, I met up with a few more people and then Doug and I chatted in between sets and at one point, he gave me a copy of a chapbook written by a few local poets/musicians.

On Jan 3rd, I went for my first ski this year, and skied around Hawrelak park. My goal is to ski all 9 of Edmonton's parks this year. I'm up to 3 so far. Then I had a slack afternoon and went for supper with [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com], who has just moved to Alberta.

My week is going to pick up in a big way by tomorrow. Today is just another working from home day, but tomorrow I head out to a meeting of the Wild Rose Agricultural Producers (NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH THE Wild Rose Alliance political party of conservatives, shudder.). The Wild Rose Agricultural Producers are a group of Alberta farmers who get together to discuss provincial issues affecting farmers. It should be a good meeting, and it's at the Fantasyland hotel in the West Edmonton Mall. I've been to a few conferences there; they have a good conference rate and decent food.

Then I'm going to the opening of the Winterlight festival . I've got a few friends involved with the festival and Mari is the festival blogger and social media coordinator. So that should be cool.

Last night I was watching some Saturday Night Live, because I couldn't fall asleep. I was really disgusted to see TWO skits with domestic violence in them. One was about Tiger Woods and his mistresses. The running gag was that Elin, his wife, was beating him. The other skit was about "Gossip Girl- Staten Island". It also involved two characters hitting each other.

I was not amused by any of this, especially since Rihanna was the musical guest, and today is the anniversary of the Montreal massacre.

Fortunately, two of my friends also noticed this and mentioned it on their twitter feeds.

Every time I get a glimpse of SNL, I wonder why it's still on. Half of the shit that they do isn't funny.

I got a much needed haircut and drove up to Grande Prairie. When I got there, my family friends and another friend hopped in a car and drove to the new Prairie Art Gallery for an art opening. The event was massive! It was the opening of the second show in the new Prairie Art Gallery and there were hundreds of people there. They had a rock band, free food (roast pork sandwiches and chips) and a chocolate fountain. The art was pretty cool as well. It was a rather surreal event for me, because I saw a lot of people that I have interviewed one or two times. However, I also got a chance to catch up with some friends and hang out at the new art gallery in GP. After that, Jon and Laura and I went home where I cuddled with the Yorkshire terrier and we watched "Mad Men", which I don't really care for. (Confession- I don't really care for Flight of the Conchords either)

Going to weddings requires a lot of work. Yesterday I bought my dress, shoes and wrap. The dress is a red, off the shoulder jersey style dress with great draping. Unfortunately, there was a small tear along the seam. I managed to get a small discount at the store, and took it into the tailor's today. I got a wrap to wear over the dress and a potential necklace to wear with the dress. I tried on a whole shwackload of dresses yesterday. I was not aware that so many of them were made for people with small breasts. Dresses that normally fit me would not go over my chest. I have a huge rib cage which made it challenging to find a dress that fit properly. There were a couple that I tried on that made me feel like I was falling out of the dress and I didn't think that would be a comfortable way to spend an evening.

I also went to get the card and did a few other wedding related errands today.

I've been watching Gossip girl in between my fits of busy-ness. The show just keeps on getting better and better. I managed to pick up Season 2 at the library and have been enjoyed in a bit of a marathon as I try to watch episodes in between doing all the things I have to do this week. I remember enjoying Season 1, but I'm enjoying Season 2 just as much, if not more. I love Chuck Bass. He makes evil look good.

Bad- My friend is in town and I haven't managed to catch up with her. She's at a horse show and phoned once, when I was out :( I've called back, but I think she might have already left town. Or will we go for brunch tomorrow? I don't know. Ugh.

The good- I had a good weekend. On Friday, I attended "Titus",which I've already blogged about. I neglected to mention that Mari and I were accompanied by a playwright/actor friend of hers who turned out to have the same nerd-tastic taste as I do. He loves "Veronica Mars", "How I met your mother", "Mean Girls" and a wide variety of other nerdy things that I love too. We bonded immediately (and platonically) for those of you who are following along at home.

Saturday I woke up very late and then went to the farmer's market where I went crazy because of the fresh produce. I got beans, fresh baby bok choy, white cherries, and a variety of other tasty things. Then I biked over to a friend's going away party. It was held in my neighbourhood and I clicked with the host of the going away party, who works at the independent folk radio station here in town. We ended up drinking mojitos and a tasty Brazilian drink called a caprinha, which was very strong and very boozy. The host of the party had a sheltie named Captain, who I adored and two of the guests brought their twin girls, who were seven months old. The parents were very into exposing the babies to new things, so I got to hold one of the girls for a very long time, which made me quite happy. I like babies.

From the party, I biked to meet Mari and two of her ladyfriends to go see a play called "Mother of the Year". This was an over the top black comedy penned by an Edmonton based playwright. It was created as an accompaniment to Titus, and touched on many of the themes in Titus. The play was set in the 80s, and so we got to laugh our asses off at the cast members who were wearing big sunglasses, dresses with uneven hems, shoulder pads, bad prints, lots of bling and horribly bad makeup. I remarked that I was glad that I didn't hit puberty until the 1990s, as the 1980s were a pretty shitty decade for fashion.

Unfortunately, I couldn't fall asleep when I got home since it was so fricking hot and for some reason, I had neglected to eat and woke up famished at 5:00 in the morning. It's been incredibly hot so I've been eating a lot less and have been subsisting on salads.

Today I did absolutely nothing. I watched several episodes of Weeds and then a great documentary about Ed Brown of Tassajara Zen Centre called "How to cook your life." Tomorrow it's back to work. I'll be on the road a lot this week.

Not much to report lately. I had a pleasant Canada day at my friend Amanda's house. We sat in the backyard around her fire and drank wine and in my case, cider. Then a group went off to see the fireworks and a few of us stayed behind to watch the fire.

I got a free ticket to see "The Comedy of Errors" and ended up going by myself. I've decided that I don't really LOVE Shakespeare. I like some of it, but really, it's not my favourite thing. I just feel that I should learn about it as it is so historically significant. That said, I've definitely got a hankering to go see "Antony and Cleopatra" in Saskatoon when I go.

I finished watching Season 1 of "True Blood". I love it, especially all the sexuality of the show, but I sometimes wish it wasn't so gory.

My weekend was rather quiet. I'm still catching up on work, and didn't have much to do over the weekend. On Monday night, I drove out to Barrhead to stay overnight so I could catch a bus and go to Athabasca. Athabasca is a gorgeous area that I haven't really explored.

Yesterday I went on a tour of a farm called Big Coulee Farms. The man who owns it pasture raises all his animals, including turkeys, pigs and chickens. It was a pretty interesting operation. I ended up getting home pretty late. I was supposed to go out of town again today, but there's a thunderstorm warning. I don't mind rain, but I'm not driving 3 hours to stand outside in a thunderstorm.

On Saturday, I was in a Vietnamese restaurant in Red Deer at the same time as a group of local oil patch workers. I'm not sure what these guys did, but they were dressed in work clothes and spent a lot of time talking about "up north and Fort McMurray", which is pretty much slang for "the oil patch."

One of the guys was talking loudly and really liked to swear. However, instead of actually saying f*ck, he had adapted his speech to the Battlestar Galatica vernacular and made references to "Those frakkers. Motherfracker. A bunch of frackers" etc.

I was sitting across the room and had to concentrate really hard to keep myself from laughing.

I have a nasty-ass cold. It started creeping up on me over the weekend, and I finally succumbed to it on Tuesday. Fortunately, I had worked my butt off on Monday, so I was able to slack a lot on my workload and spend Tuesday lying on the couch.

I went to my dance class on Monday night, despite my cold. I was really glad I went, because I found out that we are performing in a recital on April 6. I'm really excited about this; it's been years since I danced on a stage and I LOVE performing. This is also an impetus for me to attend all future classes, since I don't want to look like a knob on the stage. We're doing a piece that features veil work right now, and it's both challenging and a lot of fun.

In other good news, Roughing it in the books has received a fair amount of attention for our Canada Reads challenge, which was all Melanie's idea. It's nice to have good press.

Since I've been ill, I've been catching up on Battle star Galatica (now on Season 3) and spent part of yesterday watching "The Last Picture show", which I loved to bits.

I also had a major realization that has carried out over the past few days. I realized that one of the reasons why I love young adult literature is because it makes ample use of humour in serious circumstances. A lot of adult literature doesn't do this, and it's really hard to balance humour and tragedy in adult lit. This realization opened my mind and strengthened my love of, and continued support of YA.

Haven't updated because I've been having a relaxing holiday. Seriously, if I were any more relaxed, I'd be comatose. The good news is that I have also been sleeping a lot. Yesterday I slept for 9 or 10 hours.

We also had the mellowest Christmas ever. My brother and his fiancee came for dinner on Christmas Eve. Christmas Day dinner was even more mellow. My parents and I didn't even have a turkey; they ate steaks and I ate a piece of salmon and then we watched "Burn after reading."

Since being home, I've watched "Burn after reading" (liked), "Wall-E" (liked) and Happy-Go-Lucky. (HATED). I also started watching Battlestar Galatica and have watched the first disc of Season 1. I'm in the middle of disc 2 now. I've written about ten poems, skated for an hour on the skating rink near the river where I watched two bridal parties and talked to a newly reunited Filipino family. I have spent countless hours cuddling with my dog and taking him for walks. He sleeps downstairs, but snuggles up on my bed in the early morning, placing his small body next to my feet.

I re-read "The Secret History" and started reading a few other books, which I am devouring slowly.

I went for coffee with [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] and went to a boxing day party at the Celtic/treeplanter bar which was attended by half of my high school and dozens of treeplanters. I stayed out late, talked to people I hadn't seen in years and got tons of hugs. Then Prosad came over for tea and we talked until 3 am. It was wonderful.

So yes, so far it has been a lovely holiday.

My heating is fixed. I had to sit here freezing until about 2:00 when the handyman came over and fixed it all up. After that was done, I ran out to Stupid Store to buy a bunch of stuff for my house. Yay.

I also finished my Food Security paper and will be handing it in tomorrow. Double yay.

This week I watched the first season of Rick and Steve the happiest gay couple in all of the world . How incredibly hilarious! If you like watching gay puppets say things that are just completely wrong, I'd recommend picking this one up. There are only 6 episodes and it's two hours of your time, so it's not a big investment.

On a more serious note, I finally got to see a documentary called She's a boy I knew . I met the filmmaker when I was living in Vancouver. The film tells Gwen's story, by interviewing six major people in her life. Gwen was born a male named Steven and she transitioned to become a woman. The journey is traced by interviews with her best friend Roari, her ex-wife Malgosia, her mom, her dad and two of her sisters. Gwen was inspired to make the documentary when her mom asked her if there was anything made by the families of transpeople that would help her understand the journey that her child was going through. This is an incredible film; it's raw, personal, funny, and sad. I recommend it highly.

Gwen is good friends with my friend Jeff, and so I facebooked her ahead of time to tell her I would be at the screening. I also got to congratulate her on the film. My friend Mari accompanied me to the screening, and she enjoyed the film as well. Mari thought that the film took a thoughtful look at gender constructs and the different ways that gender affects our lives. I must admit that it was a bit strange for me to watch the film, since I recognized a lot of people in it. I worked at Chapters with Gwen's ex-wife, and recognized a lot of the locations in the film. It was both familiar and foreign to me at the same time.

After the film, the audience had a very thoughtful and thought provoking discussion with Gwen. I told Jeff that the discussion was good, and he said that sometimes the reactions have been very intense, so we were fortunate to have a positive experience.

Really, that's about it. That's why I have not been updating. This week, I am in charge of three newspapers and am packing more boxes.

This Saturday, I watched "Bladerunner", read Stephen King's "The Mist" and then got sucked into "Intervention" and watched about three episodes. If you have never watched this tv show, please stay far away from it. It's a reality tv show, and it's extremely disturbing. Family members intervene in order to stop their friends or loved ones from drinking, or abusing drugs and then the addict gets the opportunity to accept help and go to rehab or continue using. Never before have I watched a heroin addict shoot up in the ass with water he used from a toilet bowl.

I could not look away and basically needed an intervention to stop watching. In fact, I had a hard time falling asleep after all the horror (real-life and fictional) that I ingested Saturday. And last night, I woke myself up during a dream in which I was yelling, "You have a drinking problem!"

I should talk about the books I've been reading and the movies I've been watching. Both are more interesting than anything I've been doing lately.

I started reading "Cryptonomicon" but couldn't get into it enough. However, I did like Stephenson's writing style. Could anyone recommend one of his books to me? I'd prefer something shorter, and with a more defined plotline.

In non-reading news, I'm watching Season 3 of "Lost" on DVD, and am impressed with the season so far.

This is the second year that the Giller prize award ceremony has been broadcast live and the first time that I've watched the ceremony.

The Giller is one of the largest literary honours which can be given to a fiction writer in Canada. The award comes with a cheque for $40,000 and the book that wins skyrockets in sales.

I was thoroughly impressed by the ceremony. It opened with a history of the prize, various people of note talking about literature in Canada, and shots of Canadian literati. Each book and author was profiled, and presented by Canadian actors/writers/broadcasters and the jury was allowed to give some of their thoughts on each book.

Of course I'm even more thrilled because my pick "Late nights on air" by Elizabeth Hay, was chosen as the winner!

1. The Wapiti Nordic Ski trails outside the city- They were built for the Canada Games and this was the first time I tried them out. I went for a gorgeous 3 km walk through the woods.

2. Weeds- I watched all of the first Disc of Season 1. I think it's a fabulous show.

3. Chickpea tomato zucchini soup- Made soup today, even though it was 16 degrees out.
blue_lotus13: (justingenius)
Okay, I'm only about eight episodes in, but I'm loving the show.

My favourite Hero- Hiro, for sure. He's so adorable, makes me laugh and adds a lot to the show.

Hottest hero- either Peter or Mohinder. Peter is SO my type. Dark, skinny, broody and angsty. Yep. But Mohinder has that fantastic accent.

I also like that no one on the show annoys me. Usually there's a character on a show (like Shannon on LOST, or Duncan on Veronica Mars) that I can't stand.

I've always liked Ali Larter, so I'm glad she's getting more work. And of course, I love that there are several biracial characters and think that Noah Gray-Cabey can actually act.

My one complaint so far? I love Clea Duvall, but I think she's miscast in this role.

Discuss.

Last night, I couldn't fall asleep, so I flipped on the tv. It was about 1:00. and I was flipping through some channels. I flipped by late night "Showcase". "Showcase" is a Canadian channel that shows some artsy HBO programming. They show a lot of reruns during the day, and advertise their "Fridays without Borders" which basically means that they show softcore.

Now, I've never really seen a porn. I've seen movies, and have read many books and seen random clips on the Intenet, but have never rented or been around a rented porn movie.

So last night, I was surprised to catch a glimpse of a show called "Porno Valley." It's some kind of reality porn show, featuring porn actresses competing to be "Last Girl Standing." I guess it's also meant to show people more about porn production companies, since they had a few scenes with weirdos coming in off the street wondering how they could star in porn, talking to some of the production people etc.

In some of the "reality" segments, the porn star girls were naked and getting it on with each other. There was a scene in which the girls were supposed to stimulate an all girl orgy with each other. To get past censors, their vaginas were "blotted out" during certain scenes. I found this funny, because, yeah, that blotch really hides EVERYTHING. It's not like I couldn't see that another girl was putting her hand, tongue or other objects inside the blotch.

What really got me were the women's bodies. I'm a straight woman, but I tend to think the naked female body is quite beautiful. I love nudes, both male and female and tasteful nudity in art or film is a plus. (ANd I'm not just talking about Ewan McGregor's bits)

But these women weren't attractive at all to me; they had pneumatic fake breasts which seemed ridiculously out of proportion, no waists or curves and plastic looking faces and skin. I didn't really like their personalities during the "talking" segments, and so that made them even less attractive. Some of them didn't even have butts, just flat asses.

I found these nude bodies really disturbing. Is this what is supposed to be hot? Who is creating and marketing this fantasy?

I think about the Playboy books that came out a few years ago that featured models from the 60s and 70s. We had some at Chapters- There was a blondes, brunettes and a redheads book. I thumbed through them a couple of times. The women had real curves and looked interesting. How have we gone from those women to the women I saw on tv last night?

I know I don't see a lot of naked women, but this porn concept scares me.
