Last week was pretty darn busy. I had my dance recital, which turned out to be awesome. One of the girls in our tribal number brought a big group of friends who ended up sitting in the front row. They were hooting and hollering during our number and we got more excited and danced even better. We got lots of compliments on our piece and my dance teacher even congratulated a group of us by saying, "How much did you guys rock?" It was great.
I danced well in both of my pieces and had a great time.

The day after that, I went to the doctor to renew some prescriptions and talk about this red spot I have under my eye. The patch developed last summer, and it took me a few months to clue in and realize that not all funky skin things are benign. So I went to the doctor and she gave me a prescription for some cream. Unfortunately, I had to wait at the doctor's for 2 hours, which sucked ass. Fortunately, I read almost a whole book while I was waiting.

Thursday, Friday and Saturday were filled with the Northlands Farm and Ranch show. The Edmonton Expo centre has been redone and was wonderfully designed. There are lots of spots for hanging out and relaxing in between seminars. I attended numerous agricultural seminars, worked my butt off, and got to hang out and read in between sessions.

I also attended a session for STARS air ambulance. The Cattle Feeders Association of Alberta has raised over $250,000 for STARS in the past 13 years. As a result of their huge donation, they got to have their logo put on one of the helicopters. STARS is a helicopter service that helps rural people. If there's an emergency, the STARS pilot, flight nurse and flight paramedic go get the person, and bring them to a hospital in one of the province's major centres. I admit that I thought this presentation would be kind of dull, but it was actually interesting and moving because many of the guys who attended had had some sort of experience or connection to STARS. One poor man had lost his granddaughter in an accident, and so he was really moved by the experience and started crying. However, he was comforted by some of the people there and it was quite beautiful, in a weird way.

Yesterday I hopped into my car and Fergus and I drove to Saskatoon. I'm returning him to my parents, who just got back from China. They also redid the house, and it looks completely different. Today I'm doing some work and then Mom and I are going to the bridal shop so I can go get fitted for my bridesmaid dress.

I got to see two friends that I didn't expect to see on my Saskatoon trip. My cousin lives in Marsden, which is en route between Edmonton and Saskatoon. Marsden is only about 1,000 people. On one trip home, I stopped in at the municipality office. I had thought that my cousin worked there. I learned from the people working there that she actually works in the office of a town about 20 minutes away. I recounted my attempted visit to her on facebook chat, and she told me that she was home and had Sesame Street characters in the yard in front of her house. So on my way home this time, I decided to drive around the town and find her. For some reason, my mind had decided that there were Mickey Mouse characters in front of her home, so I drove around the town looking for them. Finally, I found a house with Sesame street characters and chalk drawings on the driveway. I reasoned that this family had kids and definitely would know my cousin, since the town is so small. Fortunately (as you might have guessed), this turned out to be her house and we got to visit for about half an hour. It was a pretty awesome surprise for her :)

My second surprise was from [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com], who is spending June and July in Moose Jaw. She posted on facebook that she and some friends were planning to drive to Saskatoon to see Antony and Cleopatra. I was really excited about this, and so I got to meet up with her and her friends and chat with her before the show. I love randomly seeing friends! And I was very happy to finally see a production of Antony and Cleopatra. I learned that the full length play is difficult to stage and clocks in at about 4 hours. The version we saw was about 2 hours and focussed more on the romantic intrigue than the political drama. Definitely worth it.

I decided to come home to Saskatoon for a few days just to hang out. Since I work from home, I thought I might as well work from a different location. I generally come home during the holidays, so it was nice to come home during a time that's not a holiday, so I can just hang out with people. The weather has been somewhat frightful, so Dad and I did not get a chance to check out his new boat. Instead, we went for lunch yesterday. I also got a chance to visit with friends and their two-year-old daughter, who I haven't seen since she was about 7 months old.

The parentals and I rented a great movie called "Cherry Blossoms" which is about an older couple, their family relationships and the stifling of dreams. I don't want to say too much about it, except that it's a gorgeous and extremely different film.

Fergus was so excited to see me that he started yipping with excitement when I walked in the door. I'm going back to Edmonton tomorrow. I'll be chained to my computer to write a paper that I have to do for my class. This has been a nice break, and it's been good to hang out with my family and visit a few friends. I also managed to book a trip to the Coast. I'm going to Vancouver for a wedding on Oct 4, and will spend a couple of days in Victoria and three days in Vancouver. Yay!

I am ready to go back to Edmonton. My brother has this nasty plague and we actually sprayed the entire computer after he was done coughing his gross germs all over it. I really don't want this plague.

I am also feeling the need for my own space and routine. It has been a lovely visit, but I am starting to go a bit stir crazy and want to get home.

I have also been SLEEPING since I got home. We're talking hours of sleep, without any medication. This is fantastic, and I hope it continues when I get back to Edmonton.

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like I will be able to drive home before Thursday, due to the weather and winter storms. Thursday is still up in the air. I just need to keep on checking the weather reports and forecasts every day.

Haven't updated because I've been having a relaxing holiday. Seriously, if I were any more relaxed, I'd be comatose. The good news is that I have also been sleeping a lot. Yesterday I slept for 9 or 10 hours.

We also had the mellowest Christmas ever. My brother and his fiancee came for dinner on Christmas Eve. Christmas Day dinner was even more mellow. My parents and I didn't even have a turkey; they ate steaks and I ate a piece of salmon and then we watched "Burn after reading."

Since being home, I've watched "Burn after reading" (liked), "Wall-E" (liked) and Happy-Go-Lucky. (HATED). I also started watching Battlestar Galatica and have watched the first disc of Season 1. I'm in the middle of disc 2 now. I've written about ten poems, skated for an hour on the skating rink near the river where I watched two bridal parties and talked to a newly reunited Filipino family. I have spent countless hours cuddling with my dog and taking him for walks. He sleeps downstairs, but snuggles up on my bed in the early morning, placing his small body next to my feet.

I re-read "The Secret History" and started reading a few other books, which I am devouring slowly.

I went for coffee with [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] and went to a boxing day party at the Celtic/treeplanter bar which was attended by half of my high school and dozens of treeplanters. I stayed out late, talked to people I hadn't seen in years and got tons of hugs. Then Prosad came over for tea and we talked until 3 am. It was wonderful.

So yes, so far it has been a lovely holiday.

I'm watching the election results and had to turn it off because it was making me feel ill. I'm wondering who all these Conservatives are, as I know a lot of people and few, if any of them, voted Conservative. It makes me wonder.

Let's talk about something else. I had a wonderful visit home. I picked up my brother on Friday and we drove home. My parents made us a lovely supper and my Dad, my bro and the bro's gf went to see "Body of Lies" Friday night. It was pretty good, but not amazing. Leo had skeevy facial hair and brown contacts and Russell Crowe had gained at least 25 pounds.

On Saturday, my dad and I went for lunch and then I came home and did some work and went shopping for pants. My bro cooked an Asian supper for the entire family and his gf. He made tempura shrimp, beef satay, stir fried veggies, duck and Chinese greens with garlic. My bro is a pretty amazing cook who doesn't get a lot of opportunity to use his culinary skills. We also enjoyed some wine, which was pretty awesome.

Sunday I stayed home for most of the day and then we went to a family friend's house for Thanksgiving supper. It was quite the event as more than 25 people were present. [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] was in town working the election, so I sprang her for a little bit and she joined us, which was cool. I got to visit with a lot of my extended family friends, and then I drove her back to the place where she was staying and we got to catch up a bit.

Monday I went for coffee with my friend Heather and then went to see "The Duchess" with my mom and her friend. This film is really quite well done, and will probably get Oscar nominations. Keira Knightley was fantastic, as was Ralph Fiennes. It's also an interesting story, with good acting and beautiful scenery and set design. If you're at all into period pieces, I would highly recommend this one. I liked it more than I expected to.

I spent the night at home, watching tv and hanging with my little dog. I spent a lot of time with Fergus, who is becoming quite the sweet little dog. He just likes to hang out and cuddle, and we went for a few walks over the weekend. I'm hoping he can come visit me soon. This morning, I called his name while I was lying in bed, and he came running up the stairs, jumped on the bed and then snuggled in for a little nap with me. He's becoming a very affectionate little guy as he gets older.

I drove home today and did the entire trip in less than six hours. It's nice to be back in my own space, even if I've got a lot to do the next couple of days. I'm going to a poetry reading tomorrow night, which should be fun.

While googling something else related to Johnny Cash and the prairies, I discovered that the Man in Black had actually written a love song about a girl in Saskatoon!

Girl in Saskatoon lyrics

Why didn't I know about this?

I am finally home in Saskatoon.

The flight yesterday was a bit of a gong show. I got to the Grande Prairie airport on time, only to discover that my flight was delayed by two hours. Unfortunately I had paid for parking, so I was unable to leave and go do something else, and had to stay at the airport until the flight finally left.

Due to the delay, I missed my connecting flight in Calgary. Westjet was really good about this. They stationed all the connecting passengers at the front of the plane so we could get off first and had someone meet us and direct us to the connecting counter. I was booked on the next flight to Saskatoon, and was immediately given my new boarding pass and a ten dollar meal voucher. Westjet also had a free customer phone that I could use to call my parents to tell them I would be late.

I got on the next plane to Saskatoon, but we were unable to leave on time because we were waiting for connecting passengers from Abbotsford, and we had to sit in the plane, on the runway for an extra half hour.

I arrived home 3 hours later than planned. Ugh.

I didn't bring any work with me, and left my computer at home to give myself a break. I have already taken Fergus for a walk, chatted with the parentals, and admired my dad's stylish new glasses. Today I am going for a haircut, and then Mom and I are going to see the Blue Man Group at Sask place. Tomorrow will involve dim sum (Hallelujah!) and a visit with my friend Heather. I might pick up a movie to watch with the parentals as well. The parentals have already showered me with books from their collection. It's good to be home :)

There is a big ad with my name and picture on it in the Star Phoenix, and my name appeared in an ad in the book section of the Globe and Mail. Both ads are promoting my reading. Very exciting!

Fire breaks out at Mendel art gallery

This is the major art gallery in Saskatoon. Fortunately, no art was damaged and no one was hurt.
blue_lotus13: (virginsuicides)
One of yesterday's outings was a trip to the Mendel art gallery. My favourite annual exhibit, CoolArt, (formerly SchoolArt) is currently on display. This is the exhibit where kids from schools all over Saskatoon submit their art to the collection and it's on display for a few months. It's one of the most creative exhibits each year.

In another section of the gallery, there was a special retrospective on Joni Mitchell's childhood, prepared by her mother, Myrtle. Joni was born in Alberta, and moved to Saskatoon at age 11. She considers Saskatoon to be her hometown. The exhibit consisted of old drawings, poems, photographs and report cards. Joni didn't do well in math and most of her teachers wrote, "Joan should pay attention to subjects other than art." By the time she got to high school, she was quite beautiful. In high school, her classmates voted her the most fashionable and joked in the yearbook that she was never on time for anything.

Last night, [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com], our friend Scotty and I went to see an old Jack Nicholson movie at the Broadway. The movie is called "The Passenger" and it's a movie from 1973, in which Nicholson, a reporter, steals the identity of an arms trader. However, it's a post-modern movie and so he never trades any arms and the whole thing is incredibly slow, with these really weird drawn out shots, no score or sound, and very little dialogue. All three of us found it to be a bit long. The only thing that it really had going for it were great cinematography and bad 70s fashion.

Last spring, I began reading the 100 mile diet series in thetyee.ca . I found the concept interesting, but shook my head with disbelief as I tried to imagine this concept practiced in other parts of Canada.

Lo and behold, I find that a woman I know has embarked on the Saskatchewan only diet . It turns out that you can get most things in Saskatchewan.

Fans of food or lovers of prairie, take note. There are featured recipes as well.

My flight home was fine. Westjet has installed little tvs on the back of the seats so that you can watch tv as you fly.

In other news, my dad rocks and I have the world's cutest dog, who flipped out when he saw. He's now staring at me, waiting for a walk.
