Masters of dialogue

Please mention any writer whose use of dialogue astounds you. Thanks!

I read Random Acts of Senseless Violence, by Jack Womack, this fall. It's the story of a society in collapse told by a 13 year old girl. As the book went on, she turns from a middle class kid to a street kid and her language follows suit.

However, this book was super violent and I don't know that it would be appropriate for really young kids. Not a YA at all.

(It's been a while since I read it, but this is a stunning book. I recommend it on general principal.)

Robert B. Parker is the first author who jumps to mind.

Are you looking for effective, stylized dialogue, or realistic dialogue?

For the former, Elmore Leonard is astonishing.

Both!
