I read Random Acts of Senseless Violence, by Jack Womack, this fall. It's the story of a society in collapse told by a 13 year old girl. As the book went on, she turns from a middle class kid to a street kid and her language follows suit.

However, this book was super violent and I don't know that it would be appropriate for really young kids. Not a YA at all.

(It's been a while since I read it, but this is a stunning book. I recommend it on general principal.)
