Aug. 3rd, 2003 12:27 amMom and I watched the most amazing movie tonight. It was an indie film called "Tully", which won a lot of major (Sundance??) awards. I didn't see the box so I can't tell you which awards it won, but it was really good. Very human characters, shot in Nebraska and a slow, novel like storyline which used the full talents of unknown actors. Watching it was like reading a good novel because there were so many nuances and subtleties which the filmmakers managed to capture.
The film was based on a short story by Tom McNeal, who has written a novel, a collection of short stories and has published in various lit mags. I have to check out his work. Apparently it could be classified as quintessential Americana.

As I left the Fringe today, I watched the First Nations hip hop group Skill Force perform break beat dancing. There seems to be a connection between aboriginal youth and hip hop, which makes perfect sense to me. I wonder if anyone has ever written about this. Whenever I'm in other parts of Canada, I miss indigeneous people. They make up over a quarter of the population in Saskatchewan. Later on in the week, I'll be volunteering near the First Nations merchandise area, which means I will probably eat lots of fry bread.
