Mom and I watched the most amazing movie tonight. It was an indie film called "Tully", which won a lot of major (Sundance??) awards. I didn't see the box so I can't tell you which awards it won, but it was really good. Very human characters, shot in Nebraska and a slow, novel like storyline which used the full talents of unknown actors. Watching it was like reading a good novel because there were so many nuances and subtleties which the filmmakers managed to capture.

The film was based on a short story by Tom McNeal, who has written a novel, a collection of short stories and has published in various lit mags. I have to check out his work. Apparently it could be classified as quintessential Americana.

As I left the Fringe today, I watched the First Nations hip hop group Skill Force perform break beat dancing. There seems to be a connection between aboriginal youth and hip hop, which makes perfect sense to me. I wonder if anyone has ever written about this. Whenever I'm in other parts of Canada, I miss indigeneous people. They make up over a quarter of the population in Saskatchewan. Later on in the week, I'll be volunteering near the First Nations merchandise area, which means I will probably eat lots of fry bread.

I can't get over how many people I know in Saskatchewan. I've been volunteering at the Fringe for the past two days, and I've realized I can't spit in this city without hitting someone I know. It's startling to come back from Mongolia, where I once went five days without having a conversation, to being on Broadway in Saskatoon where I have people yelling my name at me. In the past two days, I've seen people I haven't seen for the five years. It's trippy. Most people ask how I am, where I've been living, what I've been doing. One of the two Tibetans in town told me about a train going through China, and Mongolia all the way to Tibet. (The daydreams have already started).
Another friend that I haven't seen in five years offered me a place to stay if I ever go to Madrid. (!?!)

Whenever I go away and come back to Saskatoon, I realize how much a part of me this city is, and how I'm been shaped by growing up in this community, under the huge prairie sky. I keep on leaving again, and again, but I keep on coming back.
