Man, I haven't been to a good live show in a while. I used to go so frequently, and I've really fallen off it in the past few years. It's partly due to financial reasons and the fact that living in Wainwright and overseas were not conducive to seeing good live music.

I think part of the reason why I don't go as much is because I actually have to pay. That's one of the benefits of dating a sound tech. You can sneak your way into all sorts of shows. But I wouldn't trade my happiness now for all those free shows.

Today I'm going to a three hour writing workshop put on by Fred Stenson, an award winning Canadian writer. I have no idea what we'll be doing at the workshop, but it should probably be enlightening. I read Fred's book on approaching narrative and writing good stories, and really liked the ideas in it. So hopefully this workshop will rev up my jets a little, or at least give me a chance to connect with some of the members of the Saskatchewan Writers Coop and Writers Guild.

I just realized that I operate on a strange mix of caution, planning and spontaneity. I plan and scheme a lot, but then I'm pretty open to trying new things and leaping without knowing how I will land.

I'll take an example from my past- I knew that I wanted to go overseas. Therefore, I covered my bases and applied for 14 internships, all in Asia and Latin America. However, I didn't have any idea where I really wanted to go, and ended up in Indonesia and Mongolia.

I'm currently planning and scheming to move, and trying to get money to do so. Recently, I've become more open to the idea of treeplanting, so that I'll have a nice store of money before I move. I've had the scary feeling of "I have $60 in my account, and two weeks until I get paid," and I don't want that feeling anymore (or at least not for a long time.)

In the grocery store today, I said, "Yeah, I need a hard one."

What was I talking about?

Cake pans. Get your mind out of the gutter.

The coolest conversation I had today-

"Yeah, we have a Catholic monk in our science fiction writing group. He has a great idea for a novel, but he really needs to work on his prose."-

my writer friend Larry, talking about his other writing group.

I'm not doing that well this year. Last year I had seen a lot more.
