Feb. 17th, 2004 01:48 pmMan, I never get tired of watching people drive vehicles indoors. People were backing some vans out of the showroom today.
When I was in Indonesia, the family I lived with for 2 weeks would drive their motorcycles into their house and park them inside. It never got boring. I had to watch it every time.

Feb. 17th, 2004 05:26 pmNothing fuels my wanderlust more than reading books by international reporters. I'm reading "Nine parts of Desire" by journalist Geraldine Brooks, and my feet are actually starting to itch.
The book is fascinating. Brooks travelled through the Middle East talking to women about Islam and living in Islam. Among topics covered are the hijab and traditional dress, clitorodectomies, segregation, women in the army, marital relations, women in politics and Queen Noor. Countries discussed include Iran, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Jordan. It's absolutely riveting. There's so much here that I just can't absorb it all with one reading. Brooks accomplishes the writer's ideal, since she makes me want to learn more about the Middle East.
Sometimes I wish I was still studying International Studies so I could take classes about things like this. I don't know what is worse, my desire to wander, or my desire for knowledge.
