I'm reading "Mystic River" right now. I like it a lot, but I actually think the movie was a better version of the story. The book has additional characters. The movie did a great job of telling the story, and increased the pacing of the story. Has anyone read anything else by Dennis Lehane? I think he's a master of dialogue.

The cedar waxwings are back in the backyard. There are hundreds of them. I don't want to let McGregor out in the back, because I'm scared they will peck him to death.

Yesterday I went up to the university campus to attend a lecture. I got to the campus fairly early and wandered around, which was sort of interesting. So much has changed since I finished my undergrad six years ago. Going back to campus makes me feel old, because so many of the students look so young. I thought back to my undergrad. I spent a lot of time carrying around thick books, drinking a lot of coffee, stomping around in Doc Marten boots, and scowling. When I look back on it, I realize not much has changed.

I attended a lecture given by Mark Abley in a room that I used to have a class in. Abley gave a talk about his book "Spoken here- travels among threatened languages". The lecture was introduced by one of my former English professors. Talk about deja vu.

It's always a sweet day when you find a box of your old tapes in the basement. I've been craving "the Doors" like a mad woman. "The Doors" were one of my favourite bands in high school and I have almost all their albums on tape (including two live concert import tapes that I got when I was in Chile.)

I was obsessed with "The Doors" for several years. I read all the bios, watched old concert footage, and of course, listened to the albums. I think I even had some of Jim Morrison's awful poetry books. I could probably sing along with almost all the albums. There's probably several folds in my brain dedicated to Doors lyrics.

Hopefully, this should make my day better, since I'm still working on a story that is giving me trouble. I want to finish the god-damn first draft.

There's some interesting info about women at the Oscars in today's msmagazine.com/blog.

A nod is made to how many of the Oscar nominated films were actually directed by women.
