The National Film Board's In the Shadow of Gold Mountain will have its television premiere on CBC Newsworld's Rough Cuts
on Tuesday, Jan. 11 at 10 pm ET/PT, with a repeat broadcast on Friday, Jan. 14 at 10 pm ET/PT.

In the Shadow of Gold Mountain (a film by Karen Cho) uncovers stories from the last living survivors of the Chinese Head Tax and Exclusion Act, which lasted from 1885 until 1947. These personal accounts of extraordinary Chinese-Canadians who survived the era are stories of unwavering personal strength, of families torn apart and of a community's struggle for civil rights and redress.

I have the meeting at CBC today (otherwise known as "the big, scary meeting"). I'm nervous. It's not an interview for a job, just a meeting, but I'm still nervous.

I had a weird dream last night. I was sitting around talking to a bunch of people, and at one point, I asked, "If you could go back in time and give your teenaged self some advice, what would you say?"

I'd tell myself not to worry so much, and that life does get better. I'd also tell myself to continue developing my talents and self, because image and popularity don't really matter all that much.

What would you say to yourself?

The big scary meeting actually was scary. (not big though) It was as intimidating as applying for Concordia University's journalism program. I had to describe my background and experiences. I ended up talking a lot about my fascination with ethnic relations, and we discussed my skills and such. I think the woman I was meeting with liked me, which was good. However, she did tell me that I need to spend more time listening to CBC radio, and become more familiar with local issues, so that I can pitch and know where to direct my ideas. I'm to contact her in a month or two, and I may be eligible for a three day course on the ins and outs of working in radio. I guess it was a fruitful meeting, but to be honest, my stomach is completely in a knot. I didn't realize how nervous I actually was until afterward.

Prior to my interview, I began reading Pierre Berton's literary memoir, "The Joy of Writing." It is brilliant. I am pleased to note that Pierre Berton has messy handwriting.
