I'm still in a funk today, especially after I trundled all the way out to Renfrew Community Centre, only to discover that my belly dancing class does not start until next week. I am prone to wallowing in funks, so as a deterrent, I offer a list of good things-

1. Watching "Hero" last night.
2. I am now the owner of a DVD player, which was a Christmas present from Mom and Dad.
3. I am finally registered in the BC Medical Services Plan.
4. My old roommate Laura will be moving to Vancouver in February. Laura was one of my roommates in Montreal, and I'm really looking forward to spending more time with her. She's only going to stay until July, but she wants a change of scenery and to spend more time in the city. I am looking forward to it.
5. Organizing volunteers for Gung Haggis Fat Choy . This is an annual dinner event which acts as a fundraiser for the Asian Canadian Writers Workshop and promotes Asian heritage and cultural diversity. It's a big deal as CBC co-hosts come out. There is a 12 course Chinese banquet and performances by people of Scottish and Asian heritage. It should be a fun event.
6. The Chicklit meetup on Saturday. I'm looking forward to meeting people, especially [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]. There's a possibility of a storm which may prevent some people from travelling, but hopefully the storm won't happen.

Just writing these things down makes me feel better.

This year is the Year of the Cock, er Rooster, according to the Chinese lunar Calendar. The year of the Rooster begins on February 9, which also happens to be my mom's birthday. I hope this means that she gets some extra good luck this year. I(No, not that kind of good luck. I wasn't thinking about that. Honest)If anyone happens to hear about any of the gay bars having dance parties celebrating "The year of the cock", please let me know, as I would love to attend. If I was the owner of a gay bar, I'd totally try to have fun with this, and I'd be surprised if a place like "Celebrities" doesn't try to capitalize on it.

Darren recently posted this excellent article about overcoming procrastination. . I'm not a bad procrastinator because I'd rather spend time doing something than thinking about it and causing myself extra stress. As someone who tries to freelance, I have to have excellent time management skills. My biggest problem seems to be not being able to prioritize. I'm also highly susceptible to burning myself out. Fortunately, these things were also mentioned in this article.

Like everyone else, I have been horrified by the destruction and devastation caused by the tsunami. There isn't much a person can say about it. I'm also greatly comforted by the enormous generousity of donors, businesses and celebrities. It's amazing how much support and financial donations have come forth. It makes me feel better about humanity in general.

However, today I started thinking about how Africa has always been ignored and shafted. The AIDS crisis in Africa has already created numerous problems for the health care system, killed hundreds, and left many children orphaned. Yet people all over the world tend to brush this aside and it's not seen as a huge issue. Even the famine in Ethiopia received more attention and this was only in one country, not several. Is Africa ignored because the powers that be are not interested in its resources at the moment? Do people feel better if they just ignore this? Would people react as quickly if a natural disaster was to happen in Africa? Are they only reacting this quickly because it was a natural disaster? Does this have anything to do with the history of racism against blacks?

So many questions...

It's times like this when I wish I was still studying International Studies.

A store on the Drive is selling these really cute finger puppets. They have finger puppet versions of Tolstoy, Diego Rivero, Nelson Mandela, Nietzche, etc. They're adorable. I went into the store to look at them and ask how much they cost. On the table was a bunch of finger puppets marked "Great Thinker" Finger Puppets- $8. I was shocked and supposed to find a version of George W in the "Great Thinkers" box.

Me to store clerk- What is George W doing in this box? He's not a Great Thinker.
Store Clerk- I know. People were complaining about that yesterday. I'll just change it.

The sign now reads, "Great Thinkers and Bush" finger puppets.
