On Wednesday night, I skipped dance class to go to a reading at the Vancouver Public library. The people reading were Richard Van Camp, Wayde Compton, Hadani Ditmars, and Ruth Ozeki (!).

Richard writes about the North West territories and life in the North. I've heard him read before, but he's a good reader. I was quite excited to hear Wayde, as I've wanted to hear his stuff for a while. He compiled a book called "Bluesprint", which is an anthology of writing by Black British Columbians. He also does performance poetry, and is involved with a memorial project for the Black community in Vancouver. He's also mixed. His stuff was quite interesting, and he's a good reader.

Hadani is a Canadian journalist who has spent many years covering Iraq. Her book "Dancing in the No-fly zone" traces some of the recent events in Iraq. I'm very interested to read her book now.

The best thing about the evening was that I got to see Ruth Ozeki read from "My year of meats", which is one of my favourite books. She's a good reader, and comes off as nice and funny. I got her to sign my book, and we talked a little.. I also asked her if I could interview her for Ricepaper. She'll be in town at the end of June, and will have some time.

It turns out that she wrote a great deal of "My year of meats" in the Vancouver library, while living on East Cordova. Now she and her husband raise exotic chickens on Cortes Island.
