Today I decided to celebrate Lunar New Year by not working. I'm working all weekend, and will be missing 2 Chinese New Year dinners and one party, which is lame, but unavoidable.
Instead I went to see "The Aviator"-
I'll start off by saying that I liked the film, even though there were a lot of things that jarred me. I only found out afterward that the first part of the movie was filmed using Technicolour? which is why some of the colours look off. I was initially annoyed by Leo's dark hair and accent, but got used to it. I was also annoyed by Cate Blanchett, but then I really enjoyed her and thought she did a great job. I don't understand why Alan Alda is nominated for best supporting, as he was not doing anything special in this role.
Leo was great, but I'm biased. I think Leo is an underrated actor. He picks interesting roles, and is always convincing. I really like him. Also, I think he's quite hot, but... The dude needs an ass. He has the flattest ass I've seen. I was embarrassed for him in his nude scenes. Also, did anyone notice how much makeup he was wearing at the start of the movie? I wanted his lipgloss.
The cinematography was great, the production numbers were great. This has the big, sweeping scenes that make the Academy drool. Kate Beckinsale was pretty good, and Jude Law was nice as Erroll Flynn. There were some scenes that I loved- the Hepburn home, the flying shots, and the portrayal of Hughes' madness. It was also nice to see John C. Reilly supporting, which is what he always does. The dude was made to be a great supporting actor, and he does it well. He's right up there with Kevin Bacon in that regard. Leo did a great job portraying Hughes' madness and OCD. I really wished that someone would have hospitalized him and given him some medication. I thought the ending was fantastic, and it was clearly the best way to finish such a film. It looks like it might take Best Picture or Best Director and I'm glad that Leo got nominated. We shall see.
