1. South Pacific- the original- I was reading about this movie somewhere, and felt compelled to watch it. (I was probably reading about the racial tensions in the film) It's a musical about an army base in the South Pacific. As always happens in musicals, people fall in love. A nurse falls in love with an older man, only to discover that he was married to an islander and has two Asian children. She's shocked and can't marry him! OMG! And, on the other side of the island, an army dude falls in love with an islander, but then is worried because they're not the same racial background. OMG! Anyway, it was entertaining and had some great songs including "Nothing like a dame" and "Gonna wash that man right out of my hair."
2. In her Shoes- I liked the book by Jennifer Weiner, so I felt compelled to watch the movie. It was a fun but thoughtful picture, starring Cameron Diaz, Shirley MacLaine and Toni Collette. Light, but thoughtful. I like movies about family relationships and this hit the spot.
3. Sunset Boulevard- WOW! I loved this movie from start to finish. It's got the creepy gothic feel that I love, the relationship between a writer and a washed up film star and so much great dialogue that I could barely contain myself. Gloria Swanson looks like she's channelling Nosferatu in this movie. Wonderfully creepy.
4. The Last King of Scotland- WOW, again. A disturbing look at the reign of Idi Amin and his relationship with his (fictional) doctor. Loved the African setting, the acting performances and the story. I also hope that James MacAvoy gets more work, because he was able to support Forrest Whitaker's performaces. I'm very happy that Forrest walked off with the Oscar, because he fully deserved it. Warning- There were a couple of very violent scenes that almost made me barf.
