The long and winding rant

I feel crappy and bitchy basically because i'm not feeling well. My legs still hurt, my head hurts, I'm tired and I have allergies.
Good thing- I got into Ingrid's apartment and did laundry. Thank god.
Anyway, I went out for lunch and this really annoying dude insisted on sitting with me. This is one of those 50 year old pervy expats who hits on all women and pretends that they are popular and knowledgeable about all of Mongolia. I'm not buying what you're trying to sell me. Please go away.
I just want to rant about expats in general, because this has been bugging me for a while. I don't think it's fair or ethical to cheat on your partner. There are so many guys here from other countries who have Mongolian girlfriends, and then leave them and go back to their wives. In my opinion, this is just a trashy and disrespectful situation for both the wives and the girlfriends. Plus, what is the point of getting married if you're going to cheat? My belief is that two people get married because they would rather be with each other than anyone else.
I've heard some horror stories. An American volunteer impregnated a Mongolian girl, and then went back to the United States, completely avoiding and neglecting the situation. Peace Corps Volunteers have called for women, and local people bring these women to pleasure the volunteers.
I only have stories about men, but I am sure that there are lots of randy foreign women too.
This just sickens and annoys me. I don't think you should be constantly dropping your pants just because you're a foreigner. You shouldn't feel that you can take advantage of people.
I believe that you should respect yourself, respect others, and respect the culture you're in.
And now, I'm going to take a nap, as I clearly need one.

Date: 2003-06-24 10:37 am (UTC)What?? That's sad to hear if people are behaving that way. Peace Corps has a pretty strict policy regarding pregnancy. I don't have the handbook in front of me, but if you're a male volunteer and get a local woman pregnant, the organization will force him to take responsibility for her health care and support for the child. It's kind of a double standard though, because one of my friends got pregnant by her local boyfriend and they told her that the only way she could stay in was to have an abortion (which she'd have to pay for herself). Since she was getting close to 40 and had always wanted to be a mother, she quit and is still living there w/her son and boyfriend.
