Mar. 26th, 2004 05:31 pmLast night, my friend Erin and I went to see The Republic of Love because both of us absolutely loved the novel, which was written by Carol Shields. Even though the movie was directed by Deepa Mehta, who has made such lovely films such as "Hollywood/Bollywood", "Fire" and "Earth", "Republic of Love" was mediocre. The acting was good, and there were some good scenes (including one of the funniest sex scenes I've seen in a while.) However, this is one case where the movie could not measure up to the book. To make this story work, you really need the internal dialogue of the characters.
There were also significant changes made to the script. Both of the main characters were a lot younger, and the story was set in Toronto, rather than Winnipeg. This really changed the story. In the novel, the two characters fall in love during a cold winter, and spent nights and days travelling back and back to each other in the bitter cold. The final scene takes place in the cold of winter.
I was generally annoyed by this. We people on the prairies need to be represented in cinema too. It's so rare to see movies that take place here and that disappoints me.
