I've read a few things worth mentioning lately-

"The Tattooed Woman" by Marian Engel- I want to read more of Engel's stuff. This is a collection of short stories with roots in the bizarre and fantastic. I think Engel is underrated, and I can see her influence in the works of Barbara Gowdy. I think Engel was a brave writer, and the subjects and taboos she chooses to tackle are tough ones. She also writes great female characters.

"Diary of a madman and other stories" by Nikolai Gogol- I got interested in reading Gogol after reading Jhumpa Lahiri's "The Namesake". The title of a story "Diary of a madman" is a fabulously creative tale. I also love "The Nose". It's utterly bizarre and one of my favourite short stories right now.

"Why girls are weird"- Pamela Ribon- a typical chicklit book. There are some good things in here, like the Internet romance and friendships, but some of the things the characters did were sort of annoying. I read this book on the plane.

To continue with the Oscar project, I watched On the Waterfront, Best pic 1954. I think I would have gotten more out of it if I hadn't been so distracted. I finally understood why people like Brando. I really liked him in this role. There was a lot happening in this picture and I think I missed a few things. However, this is still a good film.
