I had an awesome time volunteering at the Writers Festival last night. I got to sell books at an event called "May Contain nuts." My co-seller was a neat girl who had done some work with native theatre companies and we immediately started talking about our mutual love for Drew Hayden Taylor.

The event was packed, and we sold tons of books. The event consisted of 10 readers-

Hiromi Goto- who read from her book "Hopeful monsters". She read from my favourite story "Tales from the Breast." Afterward, I told her how much I loved her work, and how her stories gave me nightmares. She told me that she was pleased with this. She was incredibly sweet and very small.

Richard Van Camp- He read from "The Lesser Blessed" which is a great book set in the North West Territories. I remember loving it when I read it.

Esi Edugyan- new author, read from her new book. It looks like a good book, but I was disturbed by the chatter in the audience.

Anosh Irani- Read from "The Cripple and his Talismans". He was extremely popular with the crowd. It doesn't hurt that this man is stupendously goodlooking.

Zoe Whittall- I got to tell her how I loved the collection "Geeks, misfits and outlaws". She read a raunchy, funny sex story.

Shane Koryczan- a spoken word poet. He performed an amazing erotic poem which he wrote when someone told him "Fat people can't write erotic poetry." This poem was so beautiful it had me in tears. I need to get a copy.

Barb Daniel- read from an upcoming book

Greg Kramer- read from a new book called "Wally." He has three books out, but I'd never heard of him before.

All in all, it was fantastic!

I forgot to mention one of the things that Richard Van Camp said in his opening banter. He talked about how he started writing because he was a reader and he didn't see anyone writing about his life. He grew up in a northern community. "No one was writing about going to school on a skidoo, or fighting in the snow," he said.

This is one of the main reasons why I want to write fiction. I read and I read, but I don't see my experiences. Very few people write about growing up in a mixed race family in a small city. I read and I read, but I never see myself.

Culinary experts, I need your aid.

Could I put cream cheese icing on a pumpkin cupcake? Would that be good?

For those of you following, "The Greatest Canadian" contest, here's an interesting article about how women are faring as "Greatest Canadians".

Since Darren has already written about it, I must now confess my Degrassi crush. I had a crush on Yick Yu, the Asian kid who becomes a partier. Check out the picture of actor Siluck Saynasy and let your mind reel at his hotness.

I found this great article which explains classic Degrassi elements and themes.

***Besides, Yick, my favourite characters were Spike, Snake, Caitlin and Melanie.

Speaking of Degrassi, some of the actors will be appearing at the Richmond Mall this weekend. I would go, because I want a Degrassi Next Generation t-shirt.

However, I'm working in the Writers festival bookstore that day.

And yes, I'm a big geek.
