Due to editorial decisions for on-high, my travel writing gig is over. It has nothing to do with my Vancouver based editor. The Toronto editors decided to change things, which means that my help is no longer needed. My editor is still paying me decently for the work I have done, but I will not be doing the full project. She has also promised to use me in her future endeavours. Needless to say, I was disappointed, but there's not much I can do. I found out yesterday, which was another reason I decided to blow off work and go see a movie. I'm feeling better today.

I'm currently working on a piece about North American Asian children's writing. As you can imagine, I'm loving this piece and might make a trip to the Children's department at the library to play, I mean, look at titles. Research, you know.

Last week (I think), Darren wrote this post about children out and about in Yaletown with male care givers. When I first read the post, I was sure that the demographics were different for the Commercial Drive area. While returning from the Brittania Branch library, I saw 5 men taking care of children.

There are several reasons why there may be more male caregivers in the Commercial Drive area-

1. There are a lot of young families in this area, in general. There are lots of trees and parks and dogs and people of all ages in this area.
2. I also suspect that there are more people in this area who do not work the traditional 9-5 job. Because this area is lower income and has a lot of artists/musicians, etc, I'm sure that there are probably many more men who work shift work or fluctuating hours and who may be more involved in childcare.

Interestingly enough, the population of the Drive changes completely on the weekends. On the weekdays, the area is populated much more by local residents, young mothers and students. On the weekends, it is as if the population of Kitsilano decides to come out for a visit and there are a lot more lulu lemon types around.

Writing this article on Asian Canadian children's literature has proven to be most enlightening. It has proven to me that Americans are still kicking ass when it comes to Asian North American children's literature. There are some Asian Canadian kid lit authors, but not as many as I thought.

Not one to get behind on a project, I also read a book about the history of the tattoo today.
