Silverwing!!
Mar. 22nd, 2005 11:44 amYesterday I finished up "Silverwing" by Kenneth Oppel. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves fantasy and animal stories like "The Secret of Nimh" or "Watership Down." Shade is a young Silverwing bat living in a colony. Eventually he becomes separated from his colony and must find his way back. He encounters several other bats along the way and has numerous adventures.
The mythology in this story is fantastic. Oppel succeeds in creating a mesmerizing and complex world. He is quite effective at describing the sound maps the bats make and their way of thinking. The story is told from the perspective of the bats, and thus, no colours are mentioned anywhere in the book.
I think this book will become a classic.
Check out Kenneth's website . There's an interesting story about how Roald Dahl was involved with the publication of his first book in the author section.
****
I gave up on "Vancouver" after 438 pages. I just didn't feel like I was enjoying the story and it was a chore to read. Instead, I read "Disco Bloodbath" (Party Monster) by James St. James. I enjoyed it, and I really wish I knew what James St. James was doing now. If anyone can tell me, I'd love to know.
