Oscar project- Out of Africa
Apr. 21st, 2005 09:42 pm Out of Africa won Best picture in 1985. I had actually watched this one before when I was in my teens. At that time, I thought it was boring, and didn't appreciate its pacing and scenery (or the beautiful Robert Redford). I appreciated it much more on my second viewing. It's the story of a Danish woman who goes to live on a farm in Africa. She starts a coffee plantation and eventually falls in love with a safari man played by the stunning Robert Redford. Streep is great as Karen Blixen (Isak Dinesen), the woman in question. She portrays both strength and vulnerability amazingly well. The dynamics between her and the Africans living on her farm are also quite interesting. The scenery is amazing, and the score is good. I think I would like to read the book someday.
Sidenote- (Personally, I don't understand my attraction to Mr. Redford, as he is blond and blue eyed and normally, I'm attracted to dark haired, dark eyed types. However, I find him appealing in almost every film I watch him in. His character in this film is a passionate, intelligent safari man, so that intensified my lust.)
