Dentist and "Crash"
May. 13th, 2005 04:09 pmSo I went to the dentist today because I broke my retainer. I grind my teeth so much while I sleep that I have to wear 2 retainers. Apparently one of my canines is flat because of my grinding. The dentists were amazed at the damage that my fricking grinding has done to my teeth.
Sadly, I also found out that I have gingivitis, which is turning into gum disease. Plus I have three cavities. It's a sad day for my mouth.

After being poked and prodded, I decided that I would treat myself to a movie about racism. I went to see "Crash", which I liked. My body actually hurt after seeing it because it put me on the edge and I was tense while I was watching it. There were a few plot points that I found unbelievable, but honestly, I don't know if it was just that I had trouble believing them, or if I couldn't relate to them because I'm Canadian. (Honestly, that was my thought.) It is entirely possible that I just didn't want to believe them. I think this movie did do a good job of showing people's fear, anger and prejudices. I felt that the story and situations weren't overly simplified, and that most of the characters were fairly nuanced. I thought I knew what was going to happen in some instances. In one point, it turned out that I was close, but not completely right.
At the beginning of the film, some of the people in the audience were laughing at what I felt were inappropriate scenes. I'm not sure if they were laughing out of discomfort, or because they really thought the scenes were funny. They seemed to quit about halfway through, which was good.
The best performances were from cast members that I didn't expect to blow me away. I was impressed by both Ryan Phillipe and Thandie Newton. Michael Pena was also excellent, but I'm not really familiar with his work. Of course, Don Cheadle was good, but that's not really surprising.
I wish I'd seen this movie with someone else, as it brought up a lot of things I'd like to discuss.
