Stone Butch Blues
Jul. 13th, 2005 01:57 pmI recently read "Stone Butch Blues" by Leslie Feinberg. It's a novel about a young butch coming of age before Stonewall. She/he must deal with incredible obstacles, is raped several times, has several romantic relationships, and eventually decides to do some transitioning.
This book really opened my eyes. It was written in 1993, and reads very much like an autobiography. It made me think about our ideas about gender and sexuality, human rights, liberation and how humans have a need for community and friendship. The author of this book, Leslie Feinberg, is an incredibly courageous human being. I would like to read some of hir other works, such as the book "Transgender Warriors." I think I also want to learn more about the Stonewall riots.
If you have any interest in gender, human rights or queer sexuality, I highly recommend that you read this book. It's not always an easy read, but it's definitely worthwhile.
***
On a personal note, I decided that I wanted to learn more about transgender people after meeting one of [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]'s friends. I haven't had a lot of interaction with transgendered individuals, and I really wanted to learn more.
