While teaching my class, I started reading a bunch of books about writing and freelancing, which has been more than useful. I recently picked up Betty Jane Wylie's "The Write Track (How to succeed as a freelance writer in Canada)". This has been one of the most useful books that I have ever read on the subject. I find that I am constantly learning about writing as a craft and as a business and that things continue to get better and better, even though I sometimes feel that I am struggling to keep my head above water and avoid burnout.

Betty Jane Wylie was a poet and a playwright who turned to journalism and freelancing after her husband died. Her advice is strictly no-nonsense, and I found that her book reassured me that I'm doing the right thing by trying to publish as much as I possibly can. This is the first book about writing that I've ever read that included a section on ergonomics and copyright law. I learned a lot from this book. Did you know that if you make over $30,000 as a writer you must acquire a GST number? I certainly didn't before I read this.

I highly recommend this book and it's inspired me to join , The Professional Writers Association of Canada since joining the The Editors' Association of Canada has proved so fruitful. It was even more exciting for me to discover that I can join as a professional member instead of an associate one as I've published enough in the past two years to qualify!

[Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] just linked to this article about Getting laid while on a humanitarian mission to Uganda .

I never got any action on any of my trips, even though I did offer to make out with an American student. He turned me down, but I later found out that he was having an affair with his Mongolian teacher.
