I'm not sure what is worse; my streptococcus or more Kenny G. Both are quite painful.

I am participating in a focus group later today on the spending habits of Sakatchewan residents. I get paid $40 for participating.

I'm actually trying to read less. I'm trying to write more (and have been), and I'm rereading books just to get a grasp of how good fiction is crafted. Still I've read the following-

1. "Louis Riel"- Chester Brown- an excellent graphic novel about Metis hero/rebel Louis Riel. Great illustrations, nice mix of history and biography. I learned a lot from reading it. In the spring, I'll have to take a trip to Batoche.

2. "Red plaid shirt" by Diane Schomperlen- Blah. She crafts short stories in a way that I really don't like. She uses a lot of bizarre forms, and writes in second person. Ugh.

3. "Ten thousand lovers" by Edeet Ravel- I really liked this story about a Canadian girl who falls in love with an Israeli in Israel during the 1970s. I have a better understanding about what it was like to be alive and in Israel during that period. It was a typical story, but the time period and setting made it unique.

Right now I'm reading Marjane Satrapi's "Persepolis", which is a graphic novel about a girl growing up in Iran during the revolution and war. It's very gut wrenching. This is an example of how a story is best told when the personal meets the political. Excellent historical detail. Nice drawings too.

I requested persepolis on interlibrary loan, and I can't wait for it to come.
