I finished a short essay yesterday, wrote 1,500 words of a new short story today, and took McGregor for a long walk.
I've been wanting to see this movie for several reasons-
1. I wanted to see if Katie Holmes could be someone other than Joey Potter- the answer is yes!!
2. I love Peter Hedges- His book "What's eating Gilbert Grape" is one of my favourites and I love "About a boy".
3. I wanted to see Patricia Clarkson's performance.
This is a great film. Subtle and honest, and very believable. Again, another wonderful ensemble piece with everyone doing a good job. It's a simple story, but there are many nuances in it. In my humble opinion, Peter Hedges (director and writer) is always at his best when he shows how weird families are. He has an amazing ability to show the wonderful weirdness of families and how they are bound together. I got teary at the end. I think this is a movie that a lot of people could relate to. In some ways, it felt very Canadian, because of the pacing, and because of the themes. I mean that in the most complimentary of ways.
And yes, Patricia Clarkson deserved a nomination. She's quite good in this part. The other people in the cast really gave her a lot to work with as well.
I start a new temp assignment tomorrow. I've got work for all of next week.
