I've been volunteering at the Fringe again, and so I've been fringing like a mad woman. In the past 2 days, I've seen four shows, including-
The excellent
One Man Lord of the Rings- This is a must see for any fan of the triology. You have to have seen the movies to really get this.Charlie Ross tells the whole story, imitating numerous characters. He's bang on for many of them, including all the Hobbits and Gollum. This was a funny and wonderful show.
I ushered for two performances including
Cold Toast- A one woman show about a diner. Montreal based performer Angela Potvin was good playing about 4 or five characters. This is a story about waitresses and customers in a diner, with a surprising twist to it. Good but not the best thing I've seen. If you've ever been a waitress, you'll be amused.
and
Triptych- A dance performance by two Saskatonian companies. I hated the first number, which was called "Mother's Tongue". It was a dance about birth, and I tend to hate that sort of thing. I thought it was long and boring, and I hated the musical selection. However, I loved the next two dances, which were choreographed by Jackie Latendresse. These were performance numbers featuring four dancers. They were vibrant, creative and had a lot of energy. The themes for each number were dark, which I really enjoyed.
Later on that evening, my friend Ramona and I went to see another local performance called
Geek- I loved this one. It was another one woman play about growing up as a geek. I could relate to a lot of it, as could many people in the audience. Local actress Catherine Harrison traced her geekiness through childhood and high school, talked about geeky dating and her crush on one of the members of the New Kids. This play was both funny and uplifting.
I'm now becoming convinced that I could write a Fringe play. I think I want to write a play about treeplanting.
