but i think ... convoluted, but a girlfriend from ryan's old life came back into his life (she had a shitty boyfriend, he protected her...) and then she got pregnant. so he went to live with her (they slept together once, or something) to eventually raise the kid.
the girl ended up faking losing the baby so ryan would leave because she knew he was only doing it out of duty.
actually, it was BEFORE that...although teresa (ryan's ex-gf) suddenly coming back into his life really put the nail in the coffin, so to speak.
ryan broke up with marissa because this new kid from school (oliver) started really hitting on marissa. marissa always thought they would just be good friends, but ryan was pissed she let oliver get between them so easily.
eventually, oliver turned out to be some crazy stalker-typ e and he left the o.c. and the show for good.
