I recently devoured China Mieville's first novel King Rat . It's a Pied Piper story set in 20th century London. I'd recommend it if you like dark urban fantasy, such as Neil Gaiman or Jonathan Carroll. It was actually recommended to me by one of the fine gentlemen at Vancouver's Pulp Fiction.

Yay Pulp Fiction

I love that store. I chat with Chris Brayshaw all the time (bald guy, glasses, he started the place). He's a smart cookie.

And he has a weblog (http://vananodyne.blogspot.com/) too. I think he's wrong about A Scanner Darkly's prospects to be a good film though. Don't let me down Richard Linklater!

Sounds like one I should check out! If you like that subgenre, might I also recommend The Iron Dragon's Daughter by Michael Swanwick? Jane, the protagonist, is kidnapped by fairies (so far so dull), but (this is the good bit) it's so that she can be put to work as child slave labour in a dragon-constructing factory. And then the plot develops from there.
