Since moving to the Commercial Drive area, I've noticed that a lot of the dudes out here like to rock the Morgan Spurlock (of Super Size me) look. There are a lot of dudes with some facial hair and massive sideburns. It's pretty amusing.
Chapters has been weird lately. I think it must be spring as lots of strange people have been coming in to visit.
For example- A guy came in for a book about firearms safety. He reeked of booze.
Kate Beckinsale came in and read some Robert Munsch to her daughter. She is very literate and buys a lot of books. She also has a good looking boyfriend/husband.
Spring must be affecting people in other ways. I rarely get hit on, but in the past week, I've been pursued twice by random strangers. Yesterday a guy came in to Chapters to ask me for coffee. He was really polite about it. Last week, I was followed around twice by a guy who said that he had just arrived about three weeks ago from East Africa. He followed me while I did my errands on the Drive and asked me all sorts of personal questions. I managed to brush off his request for coffee by telling him I was going to dance class.
Him- What sort of dance class?
Me- Middle Eastern.
Him- Are you Middle Eastern?
Me- No, I'm part Chinese.
Him- How come your eyes aren't slits?
ETA- [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] pointed out that I shouldn't be surprised that someone from another culture wondered why my eyes were not "slits". I agree with him. However, I was still somewhat surprised and it was an interesting experience for me on many levels, which is why I chose to share it.

How totally surprising that someone from a far-removed and very different part of the world has emerged from a culture that apparently may have considerably different views on what constitutes acceptable public discourse on matters of ethnic/"racial" physical differences.
I mean, it is surprising to hear in Vancouver, The Most Integrated, Multi-Cultural Land In The World, but I'm sure he'll figure out what he's doing wrong within a couple of years.
