It turns out that the pilot light on our furnace needs replacing and so we have had no heat since Sunday night. This sucks, especially since it has snowed in Vancouver and it's rather chilly. However, I am amused every time it snows in Vancouver because people just cannot deal with it. Residents are not used to it, and don't have proper tires. There are not enough ploughs and traffic becomes almost incapacitated. I know it's because this is because no one in Vancouver has to deal with snow very often, but as a prairie girl, the whole thing just becomes almost funny to me. To me, winter will always mean -40 and wind that tries to rip your face off.

I had that same disconnected amusement living in Seattle all those years. Seeing how the city gets shut down with a dusting of snow would just crack me up.

Now I'm back in Wisconsin, dreading the days to come...

Is it as hilly there as it is here? That's the big difference, to me. That and the SUV drivers who think their cars give them the ability to drive 60 on ice. Me, I learned to drive in Juneau, Alaska and honed my skills in Maine, so I know snow. That's why I never go anywhere here when it snows. You've seen the hill I live on - I'd never get home!

(Ha to my icon pun!)

I just moved to Wisconsin (Madison) last year from the East Coast and while, yes - it gets really cold - we barely had any snow - I mean it was ridiculous compared to all the scare tactics people used last fall. We maybe had two storms all winter and neither dropped more than 6 inches. The last winter I lived in Boston we had three 30+ inches storms in one winter.

reminds me of when it rains in l.a. - for some of the best drivers in the world, angelinos freak out at a drizzle.

We don't have car inspection here in Wisconsin (do they have that up there? It's everywhere back east) and it means that driving in the winter is very dangerous because no one is forced to replace their bald tires and they go sliding through all of the intersections!

Huh. I wasn't sure whether it had snowed or only hailed.
