So we finally watched "Serenity" this weekend. Thank you to everyone who told us to watch "Firefly" first, and thank you to [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] for enabling us and promoting fannish type behaviour.
All in all, thumbs up. Good special effects, good story, all around goodness. At first, I was distracted by the unfamiliar set and the different sounding voices, but all in all, I got used to it pretty fast. The characters were able to be themselves, the action was well-timed and paced, the special effects were great and the dialogue was witty and snappy. (Oh, George Lucas, I suggest you watch this).
As someone who is fascinated by different forms, I was also interested to see how a television series and its characters could be changed into a movie. I think it worked quite well. I'm not sure what kind of things need to be done when you want to do a successful adaptation of a tv series into a movie, but this one definitely worked.
However, my enjoyment was taken away by River. Way, way too much River! I hate this character, even though I like how Summer Glau uses her dance technique and I like to watch her move.
Also, the loss of Wash!! Heartbreaking! Traumatizing! I don't think I'd recovered by the end of the movie. I told B* that I highly suspected that someone would die, knowing Joss' body of work, and the way his mind works. And, unfortunately, I was right.
Joss is currently set to write and direct "Wonder woman" and depending on who they get to play "Wonder woman", I'm pretty sure that my ass will be in a movie seat when that hits the theatres.
