It's been a weird day. I woke up very affected by the news out of Montreal. For those of you in places other than Canada, a gunman went into Dawson College and started shooting people at the school. More than 10 people were injured and one person was killed before the gunman took his own life. The whole thing is quite terrifying.
School shootings always affect me more strongly that I anticipate. I think it's because I believe that schools are supposed to be safe. I think another reason is because of my interest and empathy for youth and youth culture. I'm not sure why, but I had a very hard time functioning normally after Columbine, and on the Sky train today, I felt like reaching out to random people. It was odd.
Two of my former roommates attended Dawson College, and I've actually been inside the building myself as I did a photoshoot for a friend in the campus photo lab.
***
Work has been crazy again, but I'm enjoying it because I'm learning so many new and different things. Today I made programs for two shows using Publisher.
Today I wrote up my application to attend the Moose Jaw festival words and found a bunch of poems that I'd written about three years ago, prior to moving to Vancouver. Life is busy and crazy, and I've got an Open House to run on Saturday.

I guess this is because I used to walk through Dawson College on my way to other places. I used to shop at the mall that was attached to it (quick groceries while at school which was only a couple blocks away). All the other shootings just seem like things that happen to other people until you can actually put a visual to the location where they happened. A lot of the people I knew in Montreal went to Dawson College for Cegep. I don't even want to mention this to anyone else but you because I don't want to be one of those people who make it all about them and talk about how this is so close to home blah blah blah just because they once saw a picture of some place where something awful happened or because their 3rd cousin dated someone whose brother went to that school once upon a time - but it has put things into an interesting light for me."
