1. Volver- I managed to snag the last volunteer pass for this movie, much to the disappointment of the guy behind me. I did feel bad about it, but not bad enough to give the pass to him. Fortunately, I managed to bump into Blanca and Tania in the theatre, so I had company to sit with.
I really liked this film. It had the typical twisted Almodovar plot, beautiful colours, good actors, a good story, families, moms and Penelope Cruz. An added bonus were Penelope's breasts, which were amazing and featured prominently in the film. I commented to others, "Man, her breasts were worth a star."
Woman behind me- "Weren't they mentioned in the credits?"
2. Away from Her- This was Sarah Polley's directorial debut, and for an added bonus, she came and did a Q and A after the film. She is very, very cute, small and articulate, and totally down to earth. I loved her film. It was about the end of a marriage, and about love. The husband has to put his wife in a retirement facility; she then forgets him and falls in love with someone else. Julie Christie, Olympia Dukakis and Gordon Pinsent star. It's a beautiful film, and super Canadian. There are Canadian references all over the place. This film made me cry, and cry and cry. In fact, I bawled during most of it, but please don't let that stop you from seeing it.
