For some reason, I've been watching a lot of Oscar related movies, but I haven't written about any of them. Granted, my participation is somewhat limited because of my location this year, but I've still managed to see a few of the nominees.
An Inconvenient Truth- A wonderful documentary that really made sense and helped describe climate change. I hope a lot of people saw this film and damn it, I hope it wins. I thought it was great.
Half-Nelson- Ryan Gosling was really good in this. In fact, he was so good that I ended up watching "The Notebook" on tv this weekend. (I did not cry) The story was different and I thought it portrayed drug use and the way people fall into drug use in a realistic manner. Gosling won't win for this, but it was good that he was nominated. I also think that part of his performance in this movie was helped by his excellent co-star Shareeka Epps. She was fantastic in the student role, and I hope she gets a lot more work. I'm sure that Gosling will get more from this. I would describe this as a "quiet" film, but one worth seeing. (But I didn't care for the ending.)
Water- A beautiful film by Deepa Mehta, one of my favourite directors. This film tells the story of a seven year old child who becomes a widow and is forced to live in an ashram. It's a disturbing portrait of the caste system with some great acting and beautiful cinematography. Also,
John Abraham is smoking. I hope this one wins, but Pan's Labyrinth is a contender. (Pan's is playing in a theatre here, but I think that's one I should see in my own home, because it looks scary.)
Dreamgirls- What a fun film! Based on the story of the Supremes, you can watch this girl group rise to the top. Great performances, lovely music and fantastic costumes. If you're a fan of musicals or dance movies, you should watch this movie. The plot isn't amazing, but the musical numbers are. I didn't know Eddie Murphy could act, but act he does. Beyonce looks pretty and good, but this movie belongs to Jennifer Hudson, who steals the film. Her rendition of "I am telling you, I'm not going" is fucking amazing! I almost cried while watching the movie. I hope she wins the Oscar.
The Queen- Blah. This movie didn't do much for me. All I could think was "public relations disaster." It was fine, I just didn't care that much. THe dude who played Tony Blair was fantastic, and Helen Mirren was fine, but I just didn't get really excited about it. Whatever.
In other movie news, I watched "Shanghai Triad" which is an old gangster film by Zhang Yimou. It was pretty good, but he has definitely made better films. I'm trying to watch more Asian cinema and more Canadian cinema. I'll continue to write about these movies as I watch them.
