1. Embroideries by Marjane Satrapi- A small book which details some of the stories of the women in Iran. A fun, quick read and a good supplement for anyone who has read the Persepolis books.
2. 28 Stories of AIDS in Africa by Stephanie Nolen- One of the best books that I've read so far this year, and one I think everyone should read. Stephanie Nolen is the reporter at the African bureau for the Globe and Mail national newspaper. She's spent countless years reporting on the AIDS crisis. In this book, she tells the stories of 28 people in Africa, one for each million people affected with the disease. This book made me angry, frustrated, sad, hopeful, and filled with admiration. It even contains a useful section called "how you can help." I was so impressed by it that I wrote an email to Stephanie telling her how much I'd been moved by the book and how I appreciated her work. She emailed me a thank you back. Highly recommended. You should really read this book.
3. Slash by Slash- I never said I was high brow. THis book chronicles the life of the Guns and Roses Rocker. After reading it, I realized that G and R will NEVER get back together and that Axl is pretty damn crazy. I never knew that Slash's mom dated David Bowie, or that Slash was born in Britan. Some really interesting stories, which makes for a fun read.
4. King Leary by Quarrington- THe Canada reads winner! Tells the story of a hockey legend back in the day. It was a funny book and I'm glad it won, even though it wasn't my favourite of the five books.
5. Musicophilia by Oliver Sacks- I love Oliver Sacks and his writing on the brain. This book deals with how we process music and weird neurological conditions such as the inability to hear music, hearing music all the time, how people with brain conditions can function better thanks to music, etc. Interesting, but very technical
