Weird realization

I realized a couple days ago that I have a slight feeling of inadequacy because I was never an English major. As a result, I have not studied Shakespeare or read many of the classics. This has informed my reading habits for the past few years, as I have tried to read more classics. I also got my Shakespeare on this summer by seeing three plays, which is probably a bit of a record for me.

I was an English Lit major and I stilled missed a great deal of the canon. I've also found that things I read in college are a lot more accessible now than they were then, so it doesn't bother me much.

Again, you're not missing out. I was an English major and here I am sitting in a cubicle answering phone calls from irate computer users, while you're a published author!!!

That's cool you're reading classics. I get into that from time to time too. I've got a bunch at home that I want to read like Picture of Dorian Gray and Madame Bovary, etc.

A classic that I read in high school that I quite liked was Tess of the Dubervilles. And of course Wuthering Heights.

As for Shakespeare, I find it easier to read him than to watch one of his plays in action. Watching it is much more confusing for me whereas if I read, I can always go back and figure out what exactly is going on!! I read a lot of the main ones like MacBeth and Hamlet and Othello and Romeo/Juliet. I like MacBeth because of the witches and I like Hamlet because of Ophelia.

Again, chiming in late but I feel envious of anyone who didn't major in English. I am kicking myself for not majoring in some scientific field, or something else more useful. Majoring in literature is really majoring in theory about literature, at that most of it fashionable blather that says little but is wrapped in fancy words. (ie. useless discussions of "great texts" that few outside Universities read.

As you are demonstrating in your reading, one can read those alone.
