Girl with a pearl earring, the book

I just finished reading it today, and recommend it quite highly. For those who aren't familiar with this book, it's the fictional story of the painter Johannes Vermeer and his maid, Griet. It's set in 1674, in the Netherlands. I just tore through it. It offers an interesting depiction of painters, servant/patron/painter relationships and life in that time period. I really enjoyed reading about how the different pigments were made.
I'm looking forward to seeing the movie now, as I'm not sure how well it will translate to the screen. While it's obviously a highly visual novel, it was told in first person, and I think it will have a different tone on film.

A christmassy tale...

I was talking on the phone when the doorbell rang.

Me to my friend- "Just a second, there are kids at the door."

Kids- "Hello, can we sing a carol for you?"

Me- (Thinking they were evil little fundraisers) "Why?"

Kids- "Just for fun!"

They then sang "Jingle Bells". They were good singers and were so lively and cute that I couldn't help smiling. I don't think I've ever had random carollers before. I gave them some candy canes and wished them a Merry Christmas. It made my night.
